About The Event
On the eve of his 70th birthday, and to celebrate the re-publication of his 2003 autobiography A Dysfunctional Success, Wreckless Eric will be performing, not in London, New York, Tokyo, Amsterdam, or any other international hotspot, but in the city of Kingston Upon Hull. Eric attended the art college in Hull in the nineteen seventies and developed a deep affection for the place. Indeed, he wrote the classic Whole Wide World there, sitting on a bench on Cottingham Road on a spring evening in 1974.
One of the five sections that make up A Dysfunctional Success is entitled Hull. The re-edition includes lyrics from five songs including Gateway To Europe from his 2018 album Construction Time & Demolition. The song is of course about Hull:
They say they’re going to build a bridge
Connecting nowhere in particular with where no one wants to go…
His albums encapsulate pop, bubblegum, garage trash and psychedelia. His live performances are sonic journeys through time and space. Eric presents himself alone if not simply with electric and acoustic guitars, and electronics of his own making. For this performance he’ll be featuring songs that illustrate the story, and of course there’ll be readings from A Dysfunctional Success.
“I think I was hoping for insight into the early Stiff Records days, which I didn’t get. What I got was much better, and a great deal more interesting: a shambling, acutely observed, very funny-sad-true-sharp autobiography…” Neil Gaiman
In a world of fly-by-night fakery Wreckless Eric remains a national treasure. Paul Moody – Classic Rock
Goulden has enjoyed a genuinely extraordinary career. Alexis Petridis – The Guardian
