SUMMARY:Book Launch: Victoria Scott’s Patience at Wrecking Ball Arts Centre
DESCRIPTION:Book Launch – Victoria Scott’s Patience\, author reading and Q&A \nWrecking Ball Arts Centre\nWednesday 4th August\, 2021\nTime: 7pm (doors 6.30pm)\nTickets: FREE \nThis evening will be a celebration of Victoria Scott’s exciting new release\, Patience\, which is published on August 5th. We will be hosting Victoria for an author reading and Q&A. \nA journalist for almost two decades\, working for the BBC\, Time Out and the Telegraph\, Victoria was inspired by real life experience to author Patience. Victoria’s sister\, Clare\, has Rett syndrome and recently Victoria explored some recent research which suggests that gene therapy for Rett is a very real possibility. \nIn Patience\, the Willow family face this decision: they have been through a lot together. Louise has devoted her life to her family and raising her disabled daughter\, Patience. Pete now works abroad\, determined to provide more\, even if it means seeing less of those he loves. And Eliza\, in the shadow of her sister\, has a ‘perfect’ life in London\, striving to live up to her mother’s high standards. \nMeanwhile\, Patience lives her life quietly\, watching and judging the world while she’s trapped in her own body. She laughs\, she cries\, she knows what she wants\, but she can’t ever communicate this to those who make the decisions for her. Patience only wants a voice\, but this is impossible. \nWhen the opportunity to put Patience into a new gene therapy trial to cure her Rett syndrome becomes available\, opinions are divided. The stakes are high\, and the Willow family face an almost impossible dilemma. \nThis event promises to be an exploration of exciting new fiction. Patience is a compassionate and intelligent exploration of family\, disability and identity. \nOur cafe and licensed bar will be open through the evening\, so please join us for a relaxing time enjoying new literature.

SUMMARY:Wrecking Ball Horror Night: The Thing
DESCRIPTION:The Wrecking Ball Horror Night gets underway with John Carpenter’s The Thing (1982). \nA US research station\, Antarctica\, early-winter 1982. The base is suddenly buzzed by a helicopter from the nearby Norwegian research station. They are trying to kill a dog that has escaped from their base. After the destruction of the Norwegian chopper the members of the US team fly to the Norwegian base\, only to discover them all dead or missing. They do find the remains of a strange creature the Norwegians burned. The Americans take it to their base and deduce that it is an alien life form. After a while it is apparent that the alien can take over and assimilate into other life forms\, including humans\, and can spread like a virus. This means that anyone at the base could be inhabited by The Thing\, and tensions escalate. \n  \nDirector: John Carpenter\nWriters: Bill Lancaster (screenplay)\, John W. He has touched the hearts of blues lovers from around the world. \nRecent sightings of the one-man blues band extravaganza: \nNial was recently on the Late Late Show stealing the steel with Shane McGowan. SUMMARY:Rembrandt in Hull
DESCRIPTION:SOLD OUT \nA new comedy by Dave Lee for people who know their arts from their elbow. \nBy 1661\, the world’s most celebrated and influential artist Rembrandt Van Rijn was broke\, vilified\, homeless and a widower. He was in his mid-50’s and he was at the lowest point of his life. Bereft\, he had even given up painting. \nAt the invitation of poet (and local MP) Andrew Marvell\, Rembrandt travelled to the Yorkshire city of Hull to recuperate and rediscover some inspiration. \nWhat followed was a series of adventures as manic as they are unbelievable. \nIn his first full work for the stage\, film-maker Dave Lee weaves a fast-paced comedy around the myth\, the legend\, the facts and the falsehoods of Rembrandt’s visit to Hull\, the people he met and how it all came undone. The play is approximately 17% true. \nRembrandt in Hull will be three covid-safe\, script-in-hand performances in the new performance space above Wrecking Ball Music and Books in Whitefriargate\, Hull. It contains some swearing and sexual references. But no violence. Well\, maybe a bit. \nRembrandt in Hull is supported by Arts Council England and Hull City Council.
