SUMMARY:Man at Wrecking Ball Arts Centre
DESCRIPTION:With roots firmly planted in the fertile ground of the South Wales rock scene\, Man were formed in 1968 and\, pausing for a brief intake of breath in the late 1970s\, continue as a recording and gigging band to this day. Man’s latest album\, ‘Anachronism Tango’\, was released by Point in 2019\, along with limited edition CD EP ‘Mojo Train’. \nAlong the way many have swung their kit bags on board\, leapt into their hammocks and joined the ship’s crew. Some have stayed\, while some have left and several have done both. Repeatedly. This site contains many articles on the band’s history\, memorabilia\, recorded works and those of the various friends and relations whose paths have been crossed at some point. It’s a work in progress and perhaps\, now the Forth Bridge has at last received a decent lick of paint\, one of the few remaining continuous labours.

SUMMARY:The Songbook Sessions
DESCRIPTION:An intimate night featuring the regions finest singer/songwriters on the same stage performing\, and explaining the inspirations behind\, their music. We are proud to have some well respected stars from the Hull music scene. \nRuth Scott & James Wood\nFrom the highly acclaimed Late Night Marauders\, whirlwind soulstress Ruth Scott will be accompanied by the piano wizardry of James Wood\, their songs have a unique blend of soul\, R‘n’B and boogie evokes visions of smoky basement clubs in the 1950’s where beatniks and jazzheads would party. \nPaul Baggott\nEnigmatic frontman and songwriter for legendary Hull band Turismo\, Paul graced many stages and festivals across the land throughout the noughties with a band that were considered one of the most loved of a generation in Hull. His songs are an anthemic\, poetic take on modern life and this is a rare outing for him to explain the inspiration behind them. \nEmma Fee\nEmma has been performing in and around her hometown Hull for many years\, most frequently with her band Happy Endings. Her songs are evocative and melodic\, drawing lyrical inspiration from everyday experiences. Influenced by everything from The Beatles to Bright Eyes\, Emma’s acoustic performances are honest\, sometimes melancholic\, sometimes upbeat and always heartfelt. \nQuicksilver Kings\nLed by Keith Hagger\, this much loved acoustic trio from Hull\, UK\, who weave elements of country\, folk\, blues and pop over vintage rootsy songwriting. Their sixties-inspired\, hook-laden songs will leave you wondering if you’ve heard them before and determined to hear them again. Keith’s vocal style is reminiscent of old classics like Buddy Holly and The Everly Brothers yet has a freshness to it that never fails to blow people away.

SUMMARY:Astrid Williamson at Wrecking Ball Arts Centre
DESCRIPTION:Astrid Williamson hails from the remote Shetland Islands. She has to date released eight studio albums. ‘Rooms’ as part of indie trio Goya Dress\, and a further seven as a solo artist. Astrid’s ninth studio album\, released in February 2022\, is inspired by writings she discovered within a folder buried deep in a hard drive\, and intriguingly titled Into The Mountain. \nOver her career\, Williamson has collaborated (as a vocalist\, musician and/or co-writer) with (among others) John Cale\, Johnny Marr & Bernard Sumner (Electronic)\, Arthur Baker\, Stereophonics\, This Mortal Coil/Hope Blister originator Ivo Watts-Russell\, European luminary Stephan Eicher\, Lisa Gerrard (Dead Can Dance)\, Oystein Greni (Big Bang)\, and with Daniel Johns (Silverchair) on Lisa Gerrard’s solo album Twilight Kingdom. Williamson has also written music for film and TV\, her songs have appeared in films including Bill Forsyth’s comedy Gregory’s Two Girls (1999) and she was Musical Director\, song arranger\, and made appearances in sketches on Rob Newman’s BBC comedy series The History of The World. \nThe writings that inspired Into The Mountain\, a mix of poetry\, music and personal journal\, captured moments from a year-long tour Williamson undertook with Dead Can Dance in 2012-13\, described by Williamson as “Part letters to a lover\, or perhaps hoped for lover\, part travelogue from the life of a touring musician”. The writing\, encapsulating feelings of desire\, loss\, reflection\, and acceptance\, were then developed on an acoustic piano across ten separate nights and form the rich soundscapes and emotionally vivid alt-folk songs of the new record of the same name.

SUMMARY:Lau present Unplugged at Wrecking Ball Arts Centre
DESCRIPTION:Lau Present ‘Unplugged’ Concert Tour 2021 / 2022 \nWrecking Ball Arts Centre\nSaturday 26th February\, 2022\nTime: 8pm (doors 7pm)\nTickets: £21 (includes booking fee) \nFor the first time in over a decade\, Lau present an entirely acoustic tour. \nThe pioneering Scottish folk trio have always experimented with sound and form; the results have always been complex and thrilling. \nAlready acknowledged as phenomenal live performers (‘the UK’s best live band’ – the Guardian)\, Lau arrived at a new creative peak with 2019’s Midnight and Closedown (Reveal Records). That album was produced by John Parish (PJ Harvey\, This Is The Kit)\, who said: ‘Lau are in touch with their roots but not bound by them’. \nThe Unplugged concert tour sees traditional music’s most celebrated innovators strip away their banks of electronics\, loops and wild effects. The trio of Kris Drever (guitar\, vocals)\, Martin Green (accordion) and Aidan O’Rourke (fiddle) feel drawn to a more raw and plain-speaking aesthetic. The approach is subtler\, less about spectacle\, more about close listening. In brash and polarised political times\, here is the poetry of real instruments and considerate music making. \nPraise for Lau: \n‘Lau are a remarkable band – the most musically adventurous trio in British folk – exquisite and hypnotic\, musicianship at its best’\n★★★★★ THE GUARDIAN \n‘This is music of such stunning creativity – one of most thrilling live bands’ SUNDAY HERALD \n‘Instrumental virtuosity’ MOJO \n‘Intoxicating\, mesmerising music’\nBBC MUSIC Magazine \n‘Quite unlike anything else out there’\nACOUSTIC Magazine \nFour-time winners ʻBest Groupʼ at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards \nDoors: 7:00pm

SUMMARY:Bowie\, Cambo & All The Hype - An Evening with John Cambridge
DESCRIPTION:Bowie\, Cambo & All the Hype traces the extraordinary and pivotal friendship between David Bowie and drummer John Cambridge\, from the time when Bowie made his first major career breakthrough in 1969 to his death from cancer in 2016. \nDrummer\, musician and friend John ‘Cambo’ Cambridge lived with Bowie at Haddon Hall when he had his first hit record ‘Space Oddity’ and toured with him in Junior’s Eyes. He was there for him at many key moments – when Bowie lost his father\, passed his driving test\, played his first Glam Rock gig with Hype\, even acting as best man when Bowie married Angela Barnett in 1970. \nAnd if John had not persuaded his former Rats colleague Mick Ronson to join Bowie in February 1970\, there might never have been a Ziggy Stardust or the stellar career which followed. \nAt this special evening with John Cambridge\, the author of Bowie\, Cambo & All The Hype\, we get a backstage pass to key people and events during those crucial early years and will hear\, up close and in person\, the heartfelt stories of this unique friendship.

SUMMARY:Henry Parker at Wrecking Ball Arts Centre
DESCRIPTION:Henry Parker Live \nSupport: Dez Allenby \nWith his eco-conscious debut album ‘Silent Spring’\, Henry Parker laid down a new sound for modern folk music\, drawing deep from the well of the sixties and seventies revival. His style is a clear joining of the past and the present\, a unique voice in the folk world that echoes with sounds of the tradition\, whilst venturing beyond\, into the realms of modern folk-rock and psych. \nA devoted guitarist since childhood\, Henry Parker’s musical roots go back to a self appointed upbringing in rock and heavy metal\, yet\, at the age of 20\, paths were taken that led him adrift. Soon enthralled by the ethereal playing of Bert Jansch and Nick Drake; finger-picking and open tunings rapidly became the essence of his sound. Coupled with a love for his immediate moorland surroundings of West Yorkshire\, we are presented with a strain of informed and progressive folk music found nowhere else. \nHaving spent the past 5 years playing headline concerts and supporting many of his musical heroes\, including Michael Chapman\, Wizz Jones and Bridget St John\, Henry Parker’s 2nd album ‘Lammas Fair’ brings him closer to the forefront of the progressive folk music world. \nHeralded by Prog Magazineand Folk Radioalike it is in this latest release that Parker has evolved a style that is distinctly his own\, a meeting between 60s and 70s folk music\, the northern moorland landscape and the heavy metal background of his childhood. \n“Original material and traditional songs create an immersive and mellifluous world in which both the peace and isolation of nature are unfurled evoked through subtle arrangements” -Lammas Fair review Prog Magazine \n“Focussing on the seasons is an eternal feature of English folk music and the tradition is well tended here.” -Lammas Fair albumreview Shindig! \n“Channellingthe ghosts of Jansch and Renbourn through his fingertips\, the fluid playing and emotive singing of Yorkshire-born Henry Parker evokes the spirit of the early-60’s folk revival as if it were yesterday.” -Silent Spring review RnR Magazine ★★★★★ \n“Precision guitar playing…effortless use of loop pedals\, nice to see an unsigned folk musician playing to such a high level” -Live review (supporting Lau) FATEA \n“A really excellent youngguitarist/ songwriter” -Steve Tilston \nWebsite: www.henryparkermusic.co.uk \nFacebook: facebook.com/henryparkermusicInstagram \nTwitter: @henryparkerbfd \nDez Allenby: A founder member of 1960’s underground folk group Forest\, Dez now performs solo and in Strawberry Moon. SUMMARY:The Songbook Sessions
DESCRIPTION:An intimate night featuring four of the regions finest singer/songwriters on the same stage performing\, and explaining the inspirations behind\, their music. For the debut night at Wrecking Ball Arts Centre we are proud to have some well respected fixtures of the Hull music scene: \nLyn Acton \nHull’s first lady of soul & jazz and performing in various line ups for over 30 years\, Lyn is now best known for being the front lady and songwriter for Pearl’s Cab Ride. Not afraid to wear her heart on her sleeve\, Lyn’s songs will take you through her experiences of heartbreak through to the need to dance and enjoy life to it’s fullest. Lyn will be accompanied by John Shepherd (Pearl’s Cab Ride\, Cuba Drive\, Farino). \nMike Wright \nEasily\, one of the most gifted singer songwriters the City of Hull has ever produced. Promoting his first solo EP ‘Overland’\, Mike is well known through the area from his time fronting The Bonnitts\, Dephot and more recently 90’s indie-legends Kingmaker. Mike is a joy to behold live\, and acoustically is in the same bracket as Ray Lamontagne\, Damien Rice and James Vincent McMorrow. Not one to shout about his talent\, but once witnessed\, you’ll know you’ve just seen and heard something very special. \nEmma Fee \nSinger-songwriter Emma Fee has been performing in and around her hometown Hull for many years\, often with her band Happy Endings. More recently she has embarked on a solo project\, offering a 4 track EP in 2012 and a well received debut album “Too Busy Watching Invisible Things” in 2015. Her music has been described as being evocative and melodic\, drawing lyrical inspiration from everyday experiences. Influenced by everything from The Beatles to Bright Eyes\, Emma’s acoustic performances are honest\, sometimes melancholic\, sometimes upbeat and always heartfelt. \nBobby Joyce \nSince the late 90’s\, Bobby has been active on the Hull music scene as part of many different bands and live music nights. With influences drawn from Soul\, Blues. Indie Music and\, unashamedly\, Paul Weller\, Bobby’s songs deliver well crafted melodies alongside a powerful vocal. Most recently Bobby is known for being part of the live band in the show ‘Turn And Face The Strange’ which tells the story of Hull born\, global music icon Mick Ronson. \n

SUMMARY:Robin Ince: The Importance of Being Interested
DESCRIPTION:Robin Ince is many things. A comedian\, an author\, a broadcaster and a populariser of scientific ideas. The Guardian once declared him a ‘becardiganed polymath’ which seems about right. \nNew book The Importance of Being Interested – Adventures in Scientific Curiosity is published in October 2021 and Robin heads to Hull and the Wrecking Ball Arts Centre on his book tour for a live performance followed by a Q&A. \nRobin is probably best known as the co-host of the Sony Gold Award winning BBC Radio 4 series The Infinite Monkey Cage with Professor Brian Cox. He also co-hosts the podcast Book Shambles with Josie Long\, An Uncanny Hour and Science Shambles with Dr Helen Czerski\, all three of which are a part of The Cosmic Shambles Network\, which he also co-created. \nMore about The Importance of Being Interested – Adventures in Scientific Curiosity \nComedian Robin Ince quickly abandoned science at school\, bored by a fog of dull lessons and intimidated by the barrage of equations. But\, twenty years later\, he fell in love and he now presents one of the world’s most popular science podcasts. Every year he meets hundreds of the world’s greatest thinkers. \nIn this erudite and witty new book\, Robin reveals why scientific wonder isn’t just for the professionals. Filled with interviews featuring astronauts\, comedians\, teachers\, quantum physicists\, neuroscientists and more – as well as charting Robin’s own journey with science – The Importance of Being Interested explores why many wrongly think of the discipline as distant and difficult. From the glorious appeal of the stars above to why scientific curiosity can encourage much needed intellectual humility\, this optimistic and profound book will leave you filled with a thirst for intellectual adventure.

SUMMARY:Keith James - The Songs of Leonard Cohen at Wrecking Ball Arts Centre
DESCRIPTION:Keith James in concert: The Songs of Leonard Cohen \nWrecking Ball Arts Centre\nFriday 26th November\, 2021\nTime: 8pm (doors 7pm)\nTickets: £14 (includes booking fee) \nThese remarkable songs – stripped back to their bare honesty and courage. \n‘There is a crack in everything\, that’s how the light gets in’ – Cohen’s most memorable and visionary line from his song ANTHEM. If ever there was a sentence in modern poetry to reflect on and give hope and understanding to us all\, it is this line. This Concert begins with ANTHEM. \nEnigmatic\, mysterious and sub textural\, songwriter Leonard Cohen was an unflinching character\, with an exact sense of prose\, wry humour and the courage to wrestle with the unspoken\, forgiving human frailty with the stroke of each word. \n \nThe chilling announcement of Leonard’s death marked the end of an era. His music befriended an entire generation. Within every line of his writing\, he has been challenging us to listen more carefully\, speak more thoughtfully\, think more deeply and recognize our own fragility. Our World misses him very much. \nWith a lifetime reputation of performing in this exact way and an undying love of the ‘pure song’ Keith James gives you a concert of Cohen’s amazing material in the most intimate and sensitive way imaginable\, exposing the solitary inner strength of his greatest songs in their original perfect form. Keith has performed an extensive tour of this concert in Theatres and Arts Centres across the UK\, giving almost 500 concerts – close to 150\,000 people. This has proved to be one of the greatest honours in Keith James’ 40 year career. Keith lives in Powys\, Wales and sometimes in Andalusia\, Spain. \nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xnMR5Jn_RMw \nIncluded in the concert are Cohen’s well-known songs: Famous Blue Raincoat\, Sisters of Mercy\, Suzanne\, and Hallelujah alongside his rarer and profound writing such as Who by Fire\, Joan of Arc and Secret Life. Also included are songs from his posthumous album Thanks for the Dance such as What happens to the Heart and Keith’s dramatic performances based on the work of Federico Garcia Lorca – Cohen’s greatest influence. Keith has also transcribed into song one of Leonard’s poems from his collection ‘Book of longing’ written whilst on retreat during the 1990s. \n‘Some of the most atmospheric and emotive music you will ever hear’  – The Independent

SUMMARY:Boo Hewerdine at Wrecking Ball Arts Centre
DESCRIPTION:Boo Hewerdine \nWrecking Ball Arts Centre\nSaturday\, 20th November\, 2021\nTime: 8pm (doors 7pm)\nTickets: £12.50 (includes booking fee) \n  \nFor over 30 years Boo Hewerdine has been considered one of the UK’s finest singer-songwriters. As lead singer of seminal band\, The Bible through to his subsequent solo work and long-time collaboration with the incredible Eddi Reader he has become something of a national treasure. He is in demand as a writer\, producer and performer.  \nHis latest album ‘Before’ was recorded with supreme Danish multi-instrumentalist Gustaf Ljungren Boo’s only collaborator on the set. Whilst this is an album for the times (that echoes the darkness and confusion in Europe surrounding it’s pre-Brexit conception) ‘Before’ is also a timely reminder of the power of simplicity\, Hewerdine’s lyricism set to a subtle backdrop of vintage instrumentation. \nOn this tour he will be singing songs from his new album and his extensive back catalogue. A naturally gifted raconteur his gigs are always a total joy.
