SUMMARY:Stray at Wrecking Ball Arts Centre
DESCRIPTION:STRAY date back to 1966\, when teenagers vocalist Steve Gadd\, guitarist Del Bromham\, bass player Gary Giles and drummer Steve Crutchley formed the band whilst all were attending the local Christopher Wren School in London. \nIn 2019\, Colin Kempster replaced Stuart Uren as permanent bassist and\, for live gigs\, the band was also joined by Simon Rinaldo on keyboards. After successful concerts in late 2019 and an acclaimed set at the annual Giants of Rock Festival in Minehead\, Stray set out on a full joint headlining tour with Ken Pustelnik’s Groundhogs in February and March in 2020. \nIn 2003\, Stray were the support band to Iron Maiden on several of their European dates on the Dance of Death World Tour 2003-2004. These included dates in Spain\, Portugal\, Poland and France. There are two other Iron Maiden connections to Stray. All in Your Mind from Stray’s 1970 debut album was covered by Iron Maiden and was included on the 1995 reissue of No Prayer for the Dying\, and Maiden bassist Steve Harris’s daughter Lauren has covered Come On Over.

SUMMARY:Katie Spencer Band - Album Launch
DESCRIPTION:Katie Spencer launches her highly anticipated second album ‘The Edge of the Land’ with her band\, at Wrecking Ball Arts Centre\, Hull. \nFeaturing Katie Spencer (guitars\, vocals)\, Tom Mason (double bass) and Miles Pillinger (drums)\, plus support from Nick Jonah Davis. \nRaised in the East Yorkshire flatlands on the fringes of Hull\, Katie Spencer’s landscape has always been that of open skies and widening rivers. Industry still shapes the city here. The people\, as with the land\, are moulded by tides and stark horizons. Stand in the same place for long enough and you can watch the sun rise over the North Sea and then sink into crop fields\, glowing auburn in late-summer sun. It is this sense of space and movement that flows through Katie Spencer’s music. \nThe songwriting\, and most notably her guitar playing stems from a time when the steel-stringed instrument was truly finding its voice. Artists like Joni Mitchell\, James Taylor and perhaps most evidently Michael Chapman\, flow into her sound\, carrying with them the warmth and idealism of the early 70’s folk and songwriter movements. \nKatie Spencer’s highly anticipated new album\, The Edge of the Land (2022)\, follows her debut release\, Weather Beaten (2019) which was praised for its unique song-craft\, spell-binding musicianship and crystal sonic clarity\, as she brought together fans of music from all backgrounds and walks of life. Delicate and un-rushed\, the ten songs on The Edge of the Land drift by like ships on the horizon\, yet intimacy and introspection still remain. \nThe inclusivity found in her recorded works is most apparent when on stage\, with a personal connection and humour that allows the listener time to appreciate the emotion of the music. Her historical gig list is extensive\, taking in the world-renowned Celtic Connections and Cambridge Folk Festival\, whilst performances with Danny Thompson and Alan Thomson have left audiences in awe of her confidence and craftsmanship. \nAs live music returns to our world\, we can expect to see Katie Spencer where she belongs once more\, eyes closed\, in the moment\, performing. \n“The way Katie plays is never contrived\, showy or imitative; it sounds true … a world-class folk guitarist” – fRoots \n“Katie’s guitar playing has echoes of my dear friend the late great Bert Jansch. Like a musical weaver she threads her poetic lyrics through the guitar’s strings and produces little tapestries of song” – Ralph McTell \n“She makes her own quietly ingenious musical statement through the notes and silences\, making every note\, phrase and musical punctuation mark count in a deft\, elegant and intelligently undemonstrative fashion … Katie’s stylish blend of warmth and precision proves intensely captivating!” – Folk Radio \nwww.katiespencer.net \nhttps://www.facebook.com/katiespencermusic/\nhttps://twitter.com/KRSpencerMusic\nhttps://www.instagram.com/katiespencermusic/\nhttps://www.patreon.com/katiespencer

SUMMARY:Ship to Shore at Wrecking Ball Arts Centre
DESCRIPTION:Local legends\, actor and director Barrie Rutter\, award-winning folk musician Eliza Carthy\, original Hull Truck member and actor Alan Williams\, Hull’s fourth best poet Dean Wilson and actor Rachel Dale will combine forces to present a unique evening of story telling\, poetry and music based around a maritime theme. From classic poems about sailors\, fishermen and the sea\, tall ships to trawlers\, tall tales to sea shanties\, anecdotes to ballads\, this power ensemble promise to entertain. \nBarrie Rutter \nBorn in 1946\, the son of a fishworker\, Rutter grew up in a two-up two-down on the Hessle Road\, the fish dock area of Hull.  His acting career began colourfully\, invited by an English teacher into the school play because he “had the gob for it”. He has appeared in many films and television programmes and his career in theatre has taken him from the RSC and the National Theatre\, where he first worked closely with Tony Harrison and discovered a passion for performing in the Northern voice\, to establishing his ground breaking theatre company\, Northern Broadsides. \nEliza Carthy \nIf there is one musician who embodies the dynamism and vitality of the current English folk revival\, it’s Eliza Carthy. Beloved of staunch traditionalists and iconoclasts alike\, Eliza’s music effortlessly crosses boundaries of genre and style. Whether performing a centuries-old ballad or a self-written song\, her powerful\, nuanced voice\, fiercely beautiful fiddle playing and mesmerising live performances have influenced a whole generation of young musicians. Describing herself simply as a “modern English musician”\, Eliza Carthy is one of the most recognisable faces in British folk. Born into a formidable musical dynasty\, her mother Norma was one of The Watersons and her father Martin Carthy is a hugely influential singer and guitarist. \nAlan Williams \nAlan is a British actor and playwright\, who has performed in film\, television and theatre in both the United Kingdom and Canada. He was an original member of Mike Bradwell’s Hull Truck theatre company. Theatre includes Under The Whaleback\, Black Milk\, Terrorism\, Crave\, Open Court Weekly Rep\, Stoning Mary\, Lucky Dog\, Local (all Royal Court); Three Sisters\, Mary Stuart\, The Jew of Malta (Almeida); The Crucible (West Yorkshire Playhouse);  Krapp’s Last Tape (Hull Truck); Faith\, Hope & Charity\, As You Like It\, Here We Go\, Light Shining in Buckinghamshire\, Every Good Boy Deserves Favour\, War Horse (National); A Thousand Stars Explode in the Sky\, The Birthday Party (Lyric\, Hammersmith); A Number (Abbey); Comfort Me with Apples (Hampstead); The Scarlet Letter (Chichester Festival). Television includes: Grantchester\, Cold Feet\, The Capture\, Chernobyl\, Father Brown\, Doctors\, Casualty\, The Crown\, The Coroner\, SunTrap\, The Guilty\, Endeavour\, Starlings\, Utopia\, Doc Martin\, Midsomer Murders\, Luther\, Rome\, Shameless. Film includes: Grow Your Own\, All or Nothing\, Among Giants\, Triple Word Score\, Peterloo\, Ich War Zuhause\, The Dreamlike Pass\, Trespass Against Us\, War Horse\, London Boulevard\, Vera Drake\, The Life & Death of Peter Sellers\, Bright Young Things. \nDean Wilson \nDean Wilson is Hull’s fourth best and Withernsea’s second best poet\, a daily collector of pebbles and an enigma wrapped in rhyme. His poetry collections Take Me Up The Lighthouse\, WITH and Sometimes I’m So Happy I’m Not Safe On The Streets are published by Wrecking Ball Press. \nRachel Dale \nRachel is a writer\, actor and character comedian from Hull. Theatre credits include ‘Absolute Hell’ at the National Theatre & ‘The Hypocrite’ for the RSC/Hull Truck. Also for Truck includes ‘The Gaul’ and ‘Pub Quiz is Life’. She has previously frequented the Wrecking Ball stage in ‘Rembrandt in Hull’ and ‘DeanWorld’. Recent TV includes: Hullraisers; Four Lives; Coronation Street; The A Word and Girlfriends. Her comic characters can be found on her Youtube channel and various other corners of the internet and the occasional pub back room. She is a regular performer and dramaturg for the children’s charity Scene and Heard. \n

SUMMARY:Man at Wrecking Ball Arts Centre
DESCRIPTION:With roots firmly planted in the fertile ground of the South Wales rock scene\, Man were formed in 1968 and\, pausing for a brief intake of breath in the late 1970s\, continue as a recording and gigging band to this day. Man’s latest album\, ‘Anachronism Tango’\, was released by Point in 2019\, along with limited edition CD EP ‘Mojo Train’. \nAlong the way many have swung their kit bags on board\, leapt into their hammocks and joined the ship’s crew. Some have stayed\, while some have left and several have done both. Repeatedly. This site contains many articles on the band’s history\, memorabilia\, recorded works and those of the various friends and relations whose paths have been crossed at some point. It’s a work in progress and perhaps\, now the Forth Bridge has at last received a decent lick of paint\, one of the few remaining continuous labours.

SUMMARY:The Songbook Sessions
DESCRIPTION:An intimate night featuring the regions finest singer/songwriters on the same stage performing\, and explaining the inspirations behind\, their music. We are proud to have some well respected stars from the Hull music scene. \nRuth Scott & James Wood\nFrom the highly acclaimed Late Night Marauders\, whirlwind soulstress Ruth Scott will be accompanied by the piano wizardry of James Wood\, their songs have a unique blend of soul\, R‘n’B and boogie evokes visions of smoky basement clubs in the 1950’s where beatniks and jazzheads would party. \nPaul Baggott\nEnigmatic frontman and songwriter for legendary Hull band Turismo\, Paul graced many stages and festivals across the land throughout the noughties with a band that were considered one of the most loved of a generation in Hull. His songs are an anthemic\, poetic take on modern life and this is a rare outing for him to explain the inspiration behind them. \nEmma Fee\nEmma has been performing in and around her hometown Hull for many years\, most frequently with her band Happy Endings. Her songs are evocative and melodic\, drawing lyrical inspiration from everyday experiences. Influenced by everything from The Beatles to Bright Eyes\, Emma’s acoustic performances are honest\, sometimes melancholic\, sometimes upbeat and always heartfelt. \nQuicksilver Kings\nLed by Keith Hagger\, this much loved acoustic trio from Hull\, UK\, who weave elements of country\, folk\, blues and pop over vintage rootsy songwriting. Their sixties-inspired\, hook-laden songs will leave you wondering if you’ve heard them before and determined to hear them again. Keith’s vocal style is reminiscent of old classics like Buddy Holly and The Everly Brothers yet has a freshness to it that never fails to blow people away.

SUMMARY:Astrid Williamson at Wrecking Ball Arts Centre
DESCRIPTION:Astrid Williamson hails from the remote Shetland Islands. She has to date released eight studio albums. ‘Rooms’ as part of indie trio Goya Dress\, and a further seven as a solo artist. Astrid’s ninth studio album\, released in February 2022\, is inspired by writings she discovered within a folder buried deep in a hard drive\, and intriguingly titled Into The Mountain. \nOver her career\, Williamson has collaborated (as a vocalist\, musician and/or co-writer) with (among others) John Cale\, Johnny Marr & Bernard Sumner (Electronic)\, Arthur Baker\, Stereophonics\, This Mortal Coil/Hope Blister originator Ivo Watts-Russell\, European luminary Stephan Eicher\, Lisa Gerrard (Dead Can Dance)\, Oystein Greni (Big Bang)\, and with Daniel Johns (Silverchair) on Lisa Gerrard’s solo album Twilight Kingdom. Williamson has also written music for film and TV\, her songs have appeared in films including Bill Forsyth’s comedy Gregory’s Two Girls (1999) and she was Musical Director\, song arranger\, and made appearances in sketches on Rob Newman’s BBC comedy series The History of The World. \nThe writings that inspired Into The Mountain\, a mix of poetry\, music and personal journal\, captured moments from a year-long tour Williamson undertook with Dead Can Dance in 2012-13\, described by Williamson as “Part letters to a lover\, or perhaps hoped for lover\, part travelogue from the life of a touring musician”. The writing\, encapsulating feelings of desire\, loss\, reflection\, and acceptance\, were then developed on an acoustic piano across ten separate nights and form the rich soundscapes and emotionally vivid alt-folk songs of the new record of the same name.
