SUMMARY:Martin Turner (ex-Wishbone Ash) at Wrecking Ball Arts Centre
DESCRIPTION:Martin Turner and his band return to the concert stages during 2023 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Wishbone Ash’s seminal double live album “Live Dates” (1973). \nWishbone Ash was formed by West Country musicians Martin Turner and Steve Upton\, who arrived in London in 1969 to embark on their musical journey. Intent on creating a musical sound that was rich in texture and melody\, Martin Turner envisaged the band’s innovative harmony-guitar hallmark and guitarists Ted Turner and Andy Powell were recruited via a now legendary Melody Maker advert. The partnership of the original line-up of Wishbone Ash forged a unique musical identity that would produce some of rock music’s best loved works and influencing numerous successful bands\, resulting in millions of album sales and concert attendances. Wishbone Ash would become one of the most enduring British rock acts – its name synonymous with high quality guitar-driven melodic rock music. \nFive decades later\, the music of the classic line-ups of Wishbone Ash continues to delight audiences worldwide through both live performances and a rich legacy of recorded work that continues to be enjoyed by fans old and new. Classic album releases such as Wishbone Ash\, Argus\, Pilgrimage\, Wishbone Four\, There’s the Rub\, New England and Live Dates defined the Wishbone Ash sound and have touched the hearts of several generations of music fans. As lead vocalist\, bassist and key creative force\, founding original member Martin Turner was central to the critical and commercial success of Wishbone Ash’s most revered albums\, with his passionate vocal delivery\, songwriting ability\, keen melodic sense and production values being major ingredients in the definitive Wishbone Ash sound. Martin Turner continues to delight audiences with performances of the band’s best loved works with his current line-up\, which features guitarists Danny Willson and Misha Nikolic\, and drummer Sonny Flint. \nThe 2023 tour will see Martin and his band performing a show featuring music from Live Dates as well as other Wishbone Ash classics. Capturing the original Wishbone Ash line-up at its very best during the peak of its commercial success and featuring epic tracks such as “The King Will Come”\, “Warrior”\, “Throw Down the Sword” and “Phoenix”\, Live Dates remains one of the most enduring and best loved double live albums of the rock era. Martin Turner’s Live Dates 50th Anniversary Tour is an event that no Wishbone Ash aficionado will want to miss.

SUMMARY:The Unravelling Wilburys at Wrecking Ball Arts Centre
DESCRIPTION:This top tribute show is more than just a tribute – they are the complete package! Their great combination of brilliant musicianship and tongue in cheek humour has had rave reviews throughout the UK. Playing the country-rock songs of the Traveling Wilburys\, the band also steal some choice numbers from its five iconic members; Roy Orbison\, Tom Petty\, George Harrison\, Bob Dylan and Jeff Lynne. \nThe fabulous UNRAVELLING WILBURYS are made up of Sticky Willy\, Walter\, Thumper\, Blind Melon and Honky Tonk Wilbury\, the “real” Wilbury brothers\, who present their own unique slant on what it means to be a tribute band. The show tells the story of the fateful night in Nashville’s Tootsies Bar in 1987\, when their songs were (allegedly) stolen by Messrs Orbison & Co. and the hard road they had to tread to get ‘em back. \nWith a set list comprising of songs including ‘Handle With Care’\, ‘Tweeter And The Monkey Man’\, ‘The Devil’s Been Busy’\, ‘Pretty Woman’\, ‘While My Guitar Gently Weeps’\, ‘Mr Blue Sky’\, ‘Mr Tambourine Man’ and ‘American Girl’\, this is a show not to be missed!

SUMMARY:John Hackett Band + Carrie Martin
DESCRIPTION:John Hackett Band at Wrecking Ball Arts Centre \nSupport: Carrie Martin \nJohn Hackett has been a much-loved and admired figure in the progressive rock scene since the mid-70’s; best-known for his flute work with his brother\, former Genesis guitarist\, Steve Hackett on albums such as Voyage of The Acolyte\, Sketches of Satie and Please Don’t Touch. \n‘Progressive’ music in our sense of the word is based on rock-solid song-writing coupled with hot jazz drumming\, melodic\, funky bass\, outstanding guitar in the form of Nick Fletcher (often compared to the late great jazz-fusion maestro Allan Holdsworth)\, and John Hackett himself – whose flute playing has graced so many albums and travels with such ease between classical\, folk and rock. \nDrawing on songs from John’s solo albums Checking Out of London and Another Life\, the evening also features material from the band’s debut\, We Are Not Alone\, the Hackett/Fletcher album Beyond the Stars and tunes for JHB’s new release due out Autumn 2023 \nJohn Hackett – vocals\, flute\, keyboard\nNick Fletcher – lead guitar\nDuncan Parsons – drums\, vocals\nJeremy Richardson – vocals\, bass\, acoustic guitar

SUMMARY:Katie Spencer & Henry Parker at Wrecking Ball Arts Centre
DESCRIPTION:Katie Spencer & Henry Parker head to the Wrecking Ball Arts Centre for a mid-winter concert in the heart of Hull. \nKatie Spencer \nRaised in the East Yorkshire flatlands on the fringes of Hull\, Katie Spencer’s landscape has always been that of open skies and widening rivers. Industry still shapes the city here. The people\, as with the land\, are moulded by tides and stark horizons. \nStand in the same place for long enough and you can watch the sun rise over the North Sea and then sink into crop fields\, glowing auburn in late-summer sun. It is this sense of space and movement that flows through Katie Spencer’s music. \nThe songwriting\, and most notably her guitar playing stems from a time when the steel-stringed instrument was truly finding its voice. Artists like Joni Mitchell\, James Taylor and perhaps most evidently Michael Chapman\, flow into her sound\, carrying with them the warmth and idealism of the early 70’s folk and songwriter movements.Katie Spencer’s widely celebratednew album\, The Edge of the Land(2022)\, follows her debut release\, Weather Beaten (2019) which was praised for its unique song-craft\, spell-binding musicianship and crystal sonic clarity\, as she brought together fans of music from all backgrounds and walks of life. \nDelicate and un-rushed\, the ten songs on The Edge of the Land drift by like ships on the horizon\, yet intimacy and introspection still remain. \nThe inclusivity found in her recorded works is most apparent when on stage\, with a personal connection and humour that allows the listener time to appreciate the emotion of the music. Her historical gig list is extensive\, taking in the world-renowned Celtic Connections and Cambridge Folk Festival\, whilst performances with Danny Thompson and Alan Thomson have left audiences in awe of her confidence and craftsmanship. \nAs live music has returned to our world\, we can expect to see Katie Spencer where she belongs once more\, eyes closed\, in the moment\, performing. \n“The way Katie plays is never contrived\, showy or imitative; it sounds true … a world-class folk guitarist” – fRoots \n“Katie’s guitar playing has echoes of my dear friend the late great Bert Jansch. Like a musical weaver she threads her poetic lyrics through the guitar’s strings and produces little tapestries of song” – Ralph McTell \n“She makes her own quietly ingenious musical statement through the notes and silences\, making every note\, phrase and musical punctuation mark count in a deft\, elegant and intelligently undemonstrative fashion … Katie’s stylish blend of warmth and precision proves intensely captivating!” – Folk Radio \nHenry Parker \nWith his eco-conscious debut album ‘Silent Spring’ (2019)\, Henry Parker laid down a new sound for modern folk music\, drawing deep from the well of the sixties and seventies revival. His style is a clear joining of the past and the present\, a unique voice in the folk world that echoes with sounds\nof the tradition\, whilst venturing beyond\, into the realms of folk-rock and psych. \nA devoted guitarist since childhood\, Henry Parker’s musical roots go back to a self appointed upbringing in rock and heavy metal\, yet\, at the age of 20\, paths were taken that led him adrift. Soon enthralled by the ethereal playing of Bert Jansch and Nick Drake; finger-picking and open tunings rapidly became the essence of his sound. Coupled with a love for his immediate moorland surroundings of West Yorkshire\, we are presented with a strain of informed\, progressive folk music found nowhere else. \nHaving spent the past 5 years playing headline concerts and supporting many of his musical heroes\, including Michael Chapman\, Wizz Jones and Bridget St John\, Henry Parker’s 2nd album\, ‘Lammas Fair’\, released at the end of 2021\, brings him to the forefront of the progressive folk music world. Heralded across the music press as an essential album\, it is this latest release that has seen Parker emerge as a respected artist in the worlds of folk-rock\, psych and traditional music. \n“His relaxed vocals and songwriting are as warm and open as his tunings.” 8/10 – Uncut Magazine \n“What Parker does so effectively is to blend ancient with early-70’s and modern styles.” – Mojo ★★★★ \nwww.katiespencer.net \nhttps://www.facebook.com/katiespencermusic/\nhttps://twitter.com/KRSpencerMusic\nhttps://www.instagram.com/katiespencermusic/\nhttps://www.patreon.com/katiespencer

SUMMARY:Pavey Ark at Wrecking Ball Arts Centre
DESCRIPTION:Pavey Ark and friends bring 2020 to a close with an intimate concert at the Wrecking Ball Arts Centre. \nThis is their only Hull concert since their appearance on the Glastonbury Acoustic stage in June. With full band\, strings and horns it is certainly a show not to be missed. The band will be playing tracks from their debut album plus many news songs from their forthcoming 2023 follow up. \nAtmospheric vocals\, strings and horns glide over finger-picked guitar\, melodic bass and complex percussion. The result is a beautiful cinematic indie-folk sound that evades immediate comparison\, but upon further listening\, the band’s wide range of influences start to reveal themselves. From the laid back 60s / 70s folk of Jack.C.Frank and Rodrigues through to Nick Drake and Radiohead. Pavey Ark’s debut album Close Your Eyes and Think of Nothing received wonderful reviews from UNCUT\, Record Collector\, Folk Radio\, BBC 6 Music and many more. \n“A striking debut.” – UNCUT \n“Pavey Ark set themselves up as a simple folk band then pull the rug out from under your feet. A call to arms from a band that demands to be heard.” – Folk Radio

SUMMARY:Sarah Borges & Eric Ambel + Carol Hodge
DESCRIPTION:Sarah Borges & Eric Ambel\, with support from Carol Hodge\, play the Wrecking Ball Arts Centre. \nSarah Borges \nOne way or another Sarah Borges connects with casual mastery. Whether it’s with the comrades she’s collaborated with over nearly 20 spanking years of music making\, or the vivid portraits of people’s lives – and occasionally her own – she’s sketched in scores of emotionally resonant songs. But most of all\, Borges has built a loyal following by connecting\, through her own charismatic\, down-to-earth spirit\, with her audience – whether they’re longtime fans from back when she broke through with her terrific “Silver City” debut in 2004\, or newcomers just joining the party now. \nFast forward to the early months of 2020\, when the life-altering global pandemic hit populations hard. Closer to home\, the crisis not only suddenly\, jarringly halted performers touting or playing shows large or small\, but also quashed the creative chemistry that comes from musicians getting together and jamming in the same room. \nAs an artist whose lifeblood flowed from these real-life exchanges of camaraderie and community\, the Boston-based Borges was faced with perhaps the most daunting question of her professional career: How to connect and continue as a vital and viable working artist amid a frightfully uncertain future fraught with unknowns. \nThat’s where the aptly named brand new album “Together Alone” comes in. In a true-life twist on the old saying “when life gives you lemons…”\, a homebound Borges did the one thing she knew how to do better than almost anything else. She picked up her guitar and started writing songs such as “Wasting My Time”\, which serves as a thematic lynchpin of sorts for the new album. Set to a measured\, ruminative gait and carried on dark currents of electric guitar and Hammond organ\, the lyrics feel like a gathering storm. “It’s been awhile now since I’ve seen my friends / Don’t know when I’m gonna see ‘em again\,” Borges sings with the kind of pensive ache her twang and torch-lit voice was born for. “Without them around / It’s harder to pretend that I know where I’m going. With the new normal being an isolating life in lockdown limbo\, the songs seems to wonder whether time\, in this context\, is actually wasting us\, rather than the other way around. \nEric Ambel \n“Singer/guitarist/songwriter Eric Ambel is no knucklehead. He is many other things: an alumnus 1980’s roots-punk band The Del-Lords; member of both Steve Earle’s band the Dukes and cheerful hellraisers the Yayhoos; running buddy of the Skeletons and the Bottle Rockets’ leader of his own cool crew\, Roscoe’s Gang.” – DAVID FRICKE \nVeteran singer/guitarist/songwriter/producer/raconteur Eric Ambel—known to friends\, associates and bandmates as Roscoe—is the possessor of an estimable musical resume that’s established his credentials as a deeply committed rocker as well as a witty and thoughtful songwriter. Between his current duties as producer\, bandleader\, studio proprietor\, bar owner\, member of uber-bar-band supergroup the Yayhoos and lead guitarist of Steve Earle’s band the Dukes\, he’s found time to launch his own label\, Lakeside Lounge Records\, to redress the longstanding absence of Ambel solo product from the marketplace. \nLakeside Lounge Records’ initial release is Knucklehead\, the first new Eric Ambel album in nearly a decade. The disc compiles 15 previously unreleased tracks recorded by Ambel in a variety of locations over the past 14 years with a variety of notable collaborators\, including his fondly-remembered ’80s band the Del-Lords\, the Bottle Rockets\, Andy York (John Mellencamp)\, Warner Hodges (Jason and the Scorchers)\, Will Rigby (the dB’s)\, Tony Maimone (Pere Ubu)\, Tony Shanahan (Patti Smith)\, Ron Gremp (the Morells)\, Steven Terry (Whiskeytown)\, Martin’s Folly and Ambel’s Yayhoos cohorts Dan Baird\, Keith Christopher and Terry Anderson. Also lending a hand is Steve Earle\, who contributes a previously unheard composition\, “The Usual Time\,” and adds vocals to a new version of the Del-Lords chestnut “Judas Kiss.”

SUMMARY:Kelley Swindall & Adrian Oxaal + Jack Valero
DESCRIPTION:Headline sets from Kelley Swindall & Adrian Oxaal (from James and The Oyster Band) supported by Jack Valero \nPart Patsy & Part Dolly\, with original songs in the story-telling tradition of WIlliams\, Cash\, and Dylan\, KELLEY SWINDALL is equally at home in a biker bar or under a proscenium arch. Taking the stage with w/ just her moxie and an acoustic guitar\, she sings about the stuff classic country and folk music is made of: heartache\, heartbreak\, redemption\, and revenge \, filtered through a sassily southern perspective\, w/ equal parts humor and pathos. \nSwindall is the oldest of 7 children\, born and raised in Stone Mountain\, Georgia. As the daughter of a Conservative Evangelical US Congressman\, in a staunchly fundamentalist community\, she had a strict upbringing\, and the only music Swindall was permitted to listen to were of the Golden Oldies\, Country\, and Contemporary Christian variety. It was the former two that excited her soul\, though\, w/their story driven narratives\, honest heart on their sleeve lyrics\, and timeless melodies\, which would weave themselves into her original songs\, years later. \nSwindall left Georgia\, at the age of 18\, and after a brief stint at the University of Miami\, dropped out and made her way to New York City\, to pursue a career in the Theater. She studied at The American Academy of Dramatic Arts\, and soon after became an ensemble member of\, at the time\, Downtown NYC theater darlings The Amoralists\, performing in their plays Off- Broadway. It wasn’t until a break up with a musician\,though\, that she turned to writing songs\, in an attempt to win him back. However\, by the time she had done so\, had determined that she was better off without him\, having found new love in life\, through music. After some time in the NYC music scene\,including a Sunday nite residency at the original Holiday Cocktail Lounge i Manhattan’s East Village\, she began booking herself and touring the US \,in a ‘96 Honda Civic\, solo\, while maintaining a homebase in NYC. \nDrawn to the UK + Ireland’s rich musical heritage\, particularly its influence on american folk and early country music\, she crossed the Atlantic in Sept of 2021 to explore and tour the region for the first time\, sharing stages and bills with Robert Vincent\, Jesse Malin\, Adrian Oxaal (James) and the Urban Voodoo Machine\, to name a few. \nADRIAN OXAAL is an American-born English musician and music educator\, best known for being the lead guitarist in James 1997–2002 and 2015–present. \nSince 2012\, Oxaal has also toured the UK\, Germany\, Austria\, Canada and Scandinavia with \,and is a member of folk rock band Oysterband\, mainly playing Cello\, but also taking over on Bass Guitar and Electric Guitar. He has also played with bands Sharkboy\,and Goat. \nAdrian was born in California of mixed Norwegian-American and Guyanan ancestry\, however\, he grew up in Hull\, England where he learned guitar and cello and befriended his future James colleague Saul Davies when both were members of the City of Hull Youth Symphony Orchestra. Oxaal went on to study music at the University of Sussex in Brighton\, where he settled permanently. \nThis is a very special \, rare appearance for Adrian with his Traditional Blues Set \, only performed once or twice a year! \nJACK VALERO’s debut single ‘Heaven Help Me’ made a big statement for a debut artist and his conversational lyricism\, understated witty streak alongside spirited folk-rock instrumentation and a knack for timeless British pop songwriting proved to be a popular pick from new music champions\, earning airplay from John Kennedy at Radio X and Chris Hawkins at 6 Music being moved to say ‘this is very impressive…..stand out new music from Jack Valero…with feels of classic Elvis Costello’. \nFresh from Summer sets at Avalon Cafe Stage and Strummerville at Glastonbury\, a support tour with Will Varley and a first foray to the US as a solo artist Jack shared his second track ‘Hollow Warmth’ to growing appreciation. \n  \n

SUMMARY:International Rescue at Wrecking Ball Arts Centre
DESCRIPTION:Well\, well\, well\, \nHere they go again – another decade put to bed – and\, wouldn’t you know it – International Rescue arise from their slumbers with a compelling need to set records straight\, have their say and keep the faith. \nThe original lineup performing the original songs from the (original) eighties with added maturity and a side order of extra chutzpa. \nNostalgia ain’t what it used to be. The rehearsals say otherwise. \nNo drama kids… \n…just unfinished business

SUMMARY:Mary Gauthier\, supported by Jaimee Harris\, at Wrecking Ball Arts Centre
DESCRIPTION:Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter\, and now accomplished author\, Mary Gauthier has just released her new album Dark Enough To See The Stars (Thirty Tigers). Over the course of eight studio albums\, Mary Gauthier has firmly planted herself as a truth teller\, a songwriter unafraid to dive into the emotional core of her chosen subject. \n \nOn Dark Enough To See The Stars she mourns the loss of dear friends that include John Prine\, Nanci Griffith and David Olney\, but Gauthier takes a slightly different course by offering an optimistic side of herself with songs that celebrate the joy of new love and personal contentment.  \n\nDark Enough To See The Stars is the follow up to Gauthier’s powerful 2018 release Rifles & Rosary Beads\, which was co-written with U.S. veterans and their families and served to help them cope with the trauma experienced both abroad and at home. The album received a Grammy nomination for “Best Folk Album” and won “Album Of The Year” at the International Folk Music Awards (Folk Alliance) and Gauthier was awarded the Americana Music Association UK “International Artist Of The Year” award in 2019. \n \n‘Mary Gauthier is no stranger to the gut punch. The lyrical precision on the singer’s first eight studio albums is a testament to her ability to transform her own trauma into a purposeful and communal narrative.’ NPR Weekend Edition\n  \nInstagram: @marygauthier\nTwitter: @marygauthier_\nFacebook: @marygauthiersongs
