SUMMARY:Katie Spencer & Henry Parker at Wrecking Ball Arts Centre
DESCRIPTION:Katie Spencer & Henry Parker head to the Wrecking Ball Arts Centre for a mid-winter concert in the heart of Hull. \nKatie Spencer \nRaised in the East Yorkshire flatlands on the fringes of Hull\, Katie Spencer’s landscape has always been that of open skies and widening rivers. Industry still shapes the city here. The people\, as with the land\, are moulded by tides and stark horizons. \nStand in the same place for long enough and you can watch the sun rise over the North Sea and then sink into crop fields\, glowing auburn in late-summer sun. It is this sense of space and movement that flows through Katie Spencer’s music. \nThe songwriting\, and most notably her guitar playing stems from a time when the steel-stringed instrument was truly finding its voice. Artists like Joni Mitchell\, James Taylor and perhaps most evidently Michael Chapman\, flow into her sound\, carrying with them the warmth and idealism of the early 70’s folk and songwriter movements.Katie Spencer’s widely celebratednew album\, The Edge of the Land(2022)\, follows her debut release\, Weather Beaten (2019) which was praised for its unique song-craft\, spell-binding musicianship and crystal sonic clarity\, as she brought together fans of music from all backgrounds and walks of life. \nDelicate and un-rushed\, the ten songs on The Edge of the Land drift by like ships on the horizon\, yet intimacy and introspection still remain. \nThe inclusivity found in her recorded works is most apparent when on stage\, with a personal connection and humour that allows the listener time to appreciate the emotion of the music. Her historical gig list is extensive\, taking in the world-renowned Celtic Connections and Cambridge Folk Festival\, whilst performances with Danny Thompson and Alan Thomson have left audiences in awe of her confidence and craftsmanship. \nAs live music has returned to our world\, we can expect to see Katie Spencer where she belongs once more\, eyes closed\, in the moment\, performing. \n“The way Katie plays is never contrived\, showy or imitative; it sounds true … a world-class folk guitarist” – fRoots \n“Katie’s guitar playing has echoes of my dear friend the late great Bert Jansch. Like a musical weaver she threads her poetic lyrics through the guitar’s strings and produces little tapestries of song” – Ralph McTell \n“She makes her own quietly ingenious musical statement through the notes and silences\, making every note\, phrase and musical punctuation mark count in a deft\, elegant and intelligently undemonstrative fashion … Katie’s stylish blend of warmth and precision proves intensely captivating!” – Folk Radio \nHenry Parker \nWith his eco-conscious debut album ‘Silent Spring’ (2019)\, Henry Parker laid down a new sound for modern folk music\, drawing deep from the well of the sixties and seventies revival. His style is a clear joining of the past and the present\, a unique voice in the folk world that echoes with sounds\nof the tradition\, whilst venturing beyond\, into the realms of folk-rock and psych. \nA devoted guitarist since childhood\, Henry Parker’s musical roots go back to a self appointed upbringing in rock and heavy metal\, yet\, at the age of 20\, paths were taken that led him adrift. Soon enthralled by the ethereal playing of Bert Jansch and Nick Drake; finger-picking and open tunings rapidly became the essence of his sound. Coupled with a love for his immediate moorland surroundings of West Yorkshire\, we are presented with a strain of informed\, progressive folk music found nowhere else. \nHaving spent the past 5 years playing headline concerts and supporting many of his musical heroes\, including Michael Chapman\, Wizz Jones and Bridget St John\, Henry Parker’s 2nd album\, ‘Lammas Fair’\, released at the end of 2021\, brings him to the forefront of the progressive folk music world. Heralded across the music press as an essential album\, it is this latest release that has seen Parker emerge as a respected artist in the worlds of folk-rock\, psych and traditional music. \n“His relaxed vocals and songwriting are as warm and open as his tunings.” 8/10 – Uncut Magazine \n“What Parker does so effectively is to blend ancient with early-70’s and modern styles.” – Mojo ★★★★ \nwww.katiespencer.net \nhttps://www.facebook.com/katiespencermusic/\nhttps://twitter.com/KRSpencerMusic\nhttps://www.instagram.com/katiespencermusic/\nhttps://www.patreon.com/katiespencer

SUMMARY:Pavey Ark at Wrecking Ball Arts Centre
DESCRIPTION:Pavey Ark and friends bring 2020 to a close with an intimate concert at the Wrecking Ball Arts Centre. \nThis is their only Hull concert since their appearance on the Glastonbury Acoustic stage in June. With full band\, strings and horns it is certainly a show not to be missed. The band will be playing tracks from their debut album plus many news songs from their forthcoming 2023 follow up. \nAtmospheric vocals\, strings and horns glide over finger-picked guitar\, melodic bass and complex percussion. The result is a beautiful cinematic indie-folk sound that evades immediate comparison\, but upon further listening\, the band’s wide range of influences start to reveal themselves. From the laid back 60s / 70s folk of Jack.C.Frank and Rodrigues through to Nick Drake and Radiohead. Pavey Ark’s debut album Close Your Eyes and Think of Nothing received wonderful reviews from UNCUT\, Record Collector\, Folk Radio\, BBC 6 Music and many more. \n“A striking debut.” – UNCUT \n“Pavey Ark set themselves up as a simple folk band then pull the rug out from under your feet. A call to arms from a band that demands to be heard.” – Folk Radio

SUMMARY:Sarah Borges & Eric Ambel + Carol Hodge
DESCRIPTION:Sarah Borges & Eric Ambel\, with support from Carol Hodge\, play the Wrecking Ball Arts Centre. \nSarah Borges \nOne way or another Sarah Borges connects with casual mastery. Whether it’s with the comrades she’s collaborated with over nearly 20 spanking years of music making\, or the vivid portraits of people’s lives – and occasionally her own – she’s sketched in scores of emotionally resonant songs. But most of all\, Borges has built a loyal following by connecting\, through her own charismatic\, down-to-earth spirit\, with her audience – whether they’re longtime fans from back when she broke through with her terrific “Silver City” debut in 2004\, or newcomers just joining the party now. \nFast forward to the early months of 2020\, when the life-altering global pandemic hit populations hard. Closer to home\, the crisis not only suddenly\, jarringly halted performers touting or playing shows large or small\, but also quashed the creative chemistry that comes from musicians getting together and jamming in the same room. \nAs an artist whose lifeblood flowed from these real-life exchanges of camaraderie and community\, the Boston-based Borges was faced with perhaps the most daunting question of her professional career: How to connect and continue as a vital and viable working artist amid a frightfully uncertain future fraught with unknowns. \nThat’s where the aptly named brand new album “Together Alone” comes in. In a true-life twist on the old saying “when life gives you lemons…”\, a homebound Borges did the one thing she knew how to do better than almost anything else. She picked up her guitar and started writing songs such as “Wasting My Time”\, which serves as a thematic lynchpin of sorts for the new album. Set to a measured\, ruminative gait and carried on dark currents of electric guitar and Hammond organ\, the lyrics feel like a gathering storm. “It’s been awhile now since I’ve seen my friends / Don’t know when I’m gonna see ‘em again\,” Borges sings with the kind of pensive ache her twang and torch-lit voice was born for. “Without them around / It’s harder to pretend that I know where I’m going. With the new normal being an isolating life in lockdown limbo\, the songs seems to wonder whether time\, in this context\, is actually wasting us\, rather than the other way around. \nEric Ambel \n“Singer/guitarist/songwriter Eric Ambel is no knucklehead. He is many other things: an alumnus 1980’s roots-punk band The Del-Lords; member of both Steve Earle’s band the Dukes and cheerful hellraisers the Yayhoos; running buddy of the Skeletons and the Bottle Rockets’ leader of his own cool crew\, Roscoe’s Gang.” – DAVID FRICKE \nVeteran singer/guitarist/songwriter/producer/raconteur Eric Ambel—known to friends\, associates and bandmates as Roscoe—is the possessor of an estimable musical resume that’s established his credentials as a deeply committed rocker as well as a witty and thoughtful songwriter. Between his current duties as producer\, bandleader\, studio proprietor\, bar owner\, member of uber-bar-band supergroup the Yayhoos and lead guitarist of Steve Earle’s band the Dukes\, he’s found time to launch his own label\, Lakeside Lounge Records\, to redress the longstanding absence of Ambel solo product from the marketplace. \nLakeside Lounge Records’ initial release is Knucklehead\, the first new Eric Ambel album in nearly a decade. The disc compiles 15 previously unreleased tracks recorded by Ambel in a variety of locations over the past 14 years with a variety of notable collaborators\, including his fondly-remembered ’80s band the Del-Lords\, the Bottle Rockets\, Andy York (John Mellencamp)\, Warner Hodges (Jason and the Scorchers)\, Will Rigby (the dB’s)\, Tony Maimone (Pere Ubu)\, Tony Shanahan (Patti Smith)\, Ron Gremp (the Morells)\, Steven Terry (Whiskeytown)\, Martin’s Folly and Ambel’s Yayhoos cohorts Dan Baird\, Keith Christopher and Terry Anderson. Also lending a hand is Steve Earle\, who contributes a previously unheard composition\, “The Usual Time\,” and adds vocals to a new version of the Del-Lords chestnut “Judas Kiss.”

SUMMARY:Kelley Swindall & Adrian Oxaal + Jack Valero
DESCRIPTION:Headline sets from Kelley Swindall & Adrian Oxaal (from James and The Oyster Band) supported by Jack Valero \nPart Patsy & Part Dolly\, with original songs in the story-telling tradition of WIlliams\, Cash\, and Dylan\, KELLEY SWINDALL is equally at home in a biker bar or under a proscenium arch. Taking the stage with w/ just her moxie and an acoustic guitar\, she sings about the stuff classic country and folk music is made of: heartache\, heartbreak\, redemption\, and revenge \, filtered through a sassily southern perspective\, w/ equal parts humor and pathos. \nSwindall is the oldest of 7 children\, born and raised in Stone Mountain\, Georgia. As the daughter of a Conservative Evangelical US Congressman\, in a staunchly fundamentalist community\, she had a strict upbringing\, and the only music Swindall was permitted to listen to were of the Golden Oldies\, Country\, and Contemporary Christian variety. It was the former two that excited her soul\, though\, w/their story driven narratives\, honest heart on their sleeve lyrics\, and timeless melodies\, which would weave themselves into her original songs\, years later. \nSwindall left Georgia\, at the age of 18\, and after a brief stint at the University of Miami\, dropped out and made her way to New York City\, to pursue a career in the Theater. She studied at The American Academy of Dramatic Arts\, and soon after became an ensemble member of\, at the time\, Downtown NYC theater darlings The Amoralists\, performing in their plays Off- Broadway. It wasn’t until a break up with a musician\,though\, that she turned to writing songs\, in an attempt to win him back. However\, by the time she had done so\, had determined that she was better off without him\, having found new love in life\, through music. After some time in the NYC music scene\,including a Sunday nite residency at the original Holiday Cocktail Lounge i Manhattan’s East Village\, she began booking herself and touring the US \,in a ‘96 Honda Civic\, solo\, while maintaining a homebase in NYC. \nDrawn to the UK + Ireland’s rich musical heritage\, particularly its influence on american folk and early country music\, she crossed the Atlantic in Sept of 2021 to explore and tour the region for the first time\, sharing stages and bills with Robert Vincent\, Jesse Malin\, Adrian Oxaal (James) and the Urban Voodoo Machine\, to name a few. \nADRIAN OXAAL is an American-born English musician and music educator\, best known for being the lead guitarist in James 1997–2002 and 2015–present. \nSince 2012\, Oxaal has also toured the UK\, Germany\, Austria\, Canada and Scandinavia with \,and is a member of folk rock band Oysterband\, mainly playing Cello\, but also taking over on Bass Guitar and Electric Guitar. He has also played with bands Sharkboy\,and Goat. \nAdrian was born in California of mixed Norwegian-American and Guyanan ancestry\, however\, he grew up in Hull\, England where he learned guitar and cello and befriended his future James colleague Saul Davies when both were members of the City of Hull Youth Symphony Orchestra. Oxaal went on to study music at the University of Sussex in Brighton\, where he settled permanently. \nThis is a very special \, rare appearance for Adrian with his Traditional Blues Set \, only performed once or twice a year! \nJACK VALERO’s debut single ‘Heaven Help Me’ made a big statement for a debut artist and his conversational lyricism\, understated witty streak alongside spirited folk-rock instrumentation and a knack for timeless British pop songwriting proved to be a popular pick from new music champions\, earning airplay from John Kennedy at Radio X and Chris Hawkins at 6 Music being moved to say ‘this is very impressive…..stand out new music from Jack Valero…with feels of classic Elvis Costello’. \nFresh from Summer sets at Avalon Cafe Stage and Strummerville at Glastonbury\, a support tour with Will Varley and a first foray to the US as a solo artist Jack shared his second track ‘Hollow Warmth’ to growing appreciation. \n  \n

SUMMARY:International Rescue at Wrecking Ball Arts Centre
DESCRIPTION:Well\, well\, well\, \nHere they go again – another decade put to bed – and\, wouldn’t you know it – International Rescue arise from their slumbers with a compelling need to set records straight\, have their say and keep the faith. \nThe original lineup performing the original songs from the (original) eighties with added maturity and a side order of extra chutzpa. \nNostalgia ain’t what it used to be. The rehearsals say otherwise. \nNo drama kids… \n…just unfinished business

SUMMARY:Mary Gauthier\, supported by Jaimee Harris\, at Wrecking Ball Arts Centre
DESCRIPTION:Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter\, and now accomplished author\, Mary Gauthier has just released her new album Dark Enough To See The Stars (Thirty Tigers). Over the course of eight studio albums\, Mary Gauthier has firmly planted herself as a truth teller\, a songwriter unafraid to dive into the emotional core of her chosen subject. \n \nOn Dark Enough To See The Stars she mourns the loss of dear friends that include John Prine\, Nanci Griffith and David Olney\, but Gauthier takes a slightly different course by offering an optimistic side of herself with songs that celebrate the joy of new love and personal contentment.  \n\nDark Enough To See The Stars is the follow up to Gauthier’s powerful 2018 release Rifles & Rosary Beads\, which was co-written with U.S. veterans and their families and served to help them cope with the trauma experienced both abroad and at home. The album received a Grammy nomination for “Best Folk Album” and won “Album Of The Year” at the International Folk Music Awards (Folk Alliance) and Gauthier was awarded the Americana Music Association UK “International Artist Of The Year” award in 2019. \n \n‘Mary Gauthier is no stranger to the gut punch. The lyrical precision on the singer’s first eight studio albums is a testament to her ability to transform her own trauma into a purposeful and communal narrative.’ NPR Weekend Edition\n  \nInstagram: @marygauthier\nTwitter: @marygauthier_\nFacebook: @marygauthiersongs

SUMMARY:Boo Hewerdine at Wrecking Ball Arts Centre
DESCRIPTION:For over 30 years Boo Hewerdine has been considered one of the UK’s finest singer-songwriters. As lead singer of seminal band\, The Bible through to his subsequent solo work and long-time collaboration with the incredible Eddi Reader he has become something of a national treasure. He is in demand as a writer\, producer and performer.  \nSix-track EP Singularities was released in November 2021. His album ‘Before’ was recorded with supreme Danish multi-instrumentalist Gustaf Ljungren Boo’s only collaborator on the set. Whilst this is an album for the times (that echoes the darkness and confusion in Europe surrounding its pre-Brexit conception) ‘Before’ is also a timely reminder of the power of simplicity\, Hewerdine’s lyricism set to a subtle backdrop of vintage instrumentation. \nA naturally gifted raconteur\, Boo Hewerdine’s gigs are always a total joy.

SUMMARY:Kathryn Williams + support Robert Vincent
DESCRIPTION:Kathryn Williams is an English singer-songwriter born in Liverpool\, who to date has released 14 studio albums\, including a Mercury prize nomination\, written\, and arranged for a multitude of recording artists around the world. \nIn 2019 her record label One Little Indian put out an anthology 20-disc 2 book boxset spanning her solo career that has now sold out. She is the only female included in the Top Ten list of best Liverpool songwriters of all time. \nNew album Night Drives\, released in 2022 on One Little Independent Records\, explores a more filmic sound\, with a larger ensemble of instrumentation\, particular emphasis on the strings and production from Ed Harcourt. \nJourneying from leftfield contemporary pop to soft acoustics\, Kathryn Williams uses her latest LP to explore a variety of fresh ideas driven\, in part\, by a host of collaborators. Kirsty Logan\, Oystein Greni\, Romeo Stodart\, Matt Deighton\, Simon Edwards\, Yvette Williams\, Neill Maccoll\, Andy Bruce\, Ida Wenoe\, Joel Sarakula\, Emily Barker and John Alder all have credits on various tracks across Night Drives. \nKathryn explains: “I’ve been releasing music for 24 years now. That fact blows me away\, and things have changed so much over those years. The biggest change has been my love of co-writing and writing for other artists. This began when I first went on a writing retreat with Chris Difford forming close friendships and working relationships that are represented here”. \nHer first official album since Hypoxia in 2015\, Night Drives opens with some of Kathryn’s most immediately electronic tracks to date\, the nihilistic Human\, big ballad Answer In The Dark with all it’s bold\, layered production\, and the dynamic\, infectious Radioactive. Elsewhere on the likes of Moon Karaoke\, Magnets and The Brightest\, a more cinematic sound is explored; slowly unravelling stories backed by delicate acoustics and elated\, emotive string pieces. Put The Needle On The Record and joint closers Starry Heavens and I Am Rich In All That I’ve Lost are relaxed and fall into the more traditional world of folk inspired melancholia. Kathryn’s inimitable charm colours the whole album with emotion and affection – occasionally brooding\, always likeable. \nKathryn is a tutor at Arvon and Moniack Mhor on song writing and has her debut novel\, The Ormering Tide was published by Wrecking Ball Press to critical acclaim in March 2021. \nRobert Vincent \nRobert Vincent is one of the most acclaimed new voices on the Americana music scene. \nBorn in Crosby Liverpool\, his upbringing inculcated him with a very Merseyside culture of storytelling and language. \nA key influence would be the American country records that his father would play around the house such as Waylon Jennings and Emmylou Harris. \nHe received an early education in Pink Floyd thanks to his older brothers that he shared a bedroom with. This eclectic mix of musical influence remains palpable in the music of Vincent to this day. \nIn 2013 Robert Vincent released his debut album Life in Easy Steps. Critically well-received\, the title track was play-listed by Radio 2.  After meeting Whispering Bob Harris at an event called ‘Bluebird at the Bluecoat’ that brought the concept of the bluebird cafe in Nashville to The Bluecoat Chambers in Liverpool\, the legendary radio presenter invited Robert to perform a live session on his Radio 2 show and in 2016 awarded him with his ‘Emerging Artist’ of the year\naward at the inaugural UK Americana Awards show in Hackney London. Harris described Vincent as “absolutely magnetic” and “the real deal” \nIn 2018 his Sophomore album ‘I’ll Make the Most of my Sins’ was named UK Americana Album of the Year. Meeting and performing with musical director Ethan Johns at the award ceremony would shape his future career. In February of 2018 Robert was invited to perform on the BBC ‘Old Grey Whistle Test\, For One Night Only’ closing the show.  It was this performance that would propel him to number 1 and 2 in the iTunes Album and Singles Charts. \nA Versatile performer\, Vincent has toured extensively with full band and solo. Notable performances include Showcase performances at Americana Fest in Nashville\, Tennessee\, supporting Roger Waters at Hyde Park\, Tours with Paul Carrack and Duane Eddy who gifted him with one of his signature ‘Gretsch’ guitars after his 80th birthday celebration at The London Palladium. \nRobert Vincent’s most relevant and ambitious work to date comes in the form of his 2020 release\, ‘In this Town You’re Owned’. Vincent observes life in both his hometown and the wider world. Recorded in Legendary Rockfield Studios by Brit Award winning producer Ethan Johns who has won acclaim for his work (Paul McCartney\, Ray Lamontagne\, Laura Marling)  The talented 6-piece band recorded live straight to 16 track tape with Johns contributing musically too. Such was the hypnotic spirit between the musicians and the strength of Vincent’s material the whole of In this Town You’re Owned was recorded and mixed in two weeks flat. \nSince the February release the record has charted at number 2 in the UK Americana Charts been critically praised both in the UK and Europe and USA. At the midway point of the year American Songwriter Magazine named ‘In this Town You’re Owned’ in its top 20 albums (every genre) of 2020 to date.

SUMMARY:Straighten Out at Wrecking Ball Arts Centre
DESCRIPTION:STRAIGHTEN OUT are the world’s premier Stranglers tribute band with an extensive set-list that spans two solid hours as they re-create the ‘early years’ sound of The Stranglers\, complete with a Hammond organ and Minimoog synth; the same models used by Mr. Greenfield himself\, back in the day! \nThe growling bass sound and the quirky guitar riffs are all there to be heard as is the dual vocal ‘attack’ from the two frontmen a-la Burnel/Cornwell as they rip through the Stranglers’ classic: ‘Peaches’\, ‘Hanging Around’\, ‘No More Heroes’\, ‘5 Minutes’\, ‘The Raven’\, ‘Walk On By’\, ‘Straighten Out’\, ‘Down In The Sewer’ and many more as they cover the Stranglers’ early classic albums and beyond. \nStraighten Out will take you on a nostalgia trip that transports you back to those raw\, powerful\, exhilarating times when The Stranglers emerged through the quagmire of mediocrity to produce some of the finest music ever written. Straighten Out will put you back in that place! \nBassist Shaggy and keyboard player Mick (‘The Doc’) were together in previous Stranglers tribute band ‘Four More Heroes’ and it was only natural that these two continued on after their demise to form ‘Straighten Out’ given their love of Stranglers music and the desire to keep playing live. They set the platform with the growling bass and swirling keyboard sound so essential to reproducing the authentic Stranglers sound. Joining them are Jet ‘Beets’ Beety on drums and Phil Harvey steps up to give you the ‘Hugh’ element to complete the fearsome foursome. \nStraighten Out are a must-see tribute band!

SUMMARY:LYR at Wrecking Ball Arts Centre
DESCRIPTION:LYR + support: Vicky Foster & The Broken Orchestra. \nLYR is a band comprised of author and current British poet laureate Simon Armitage\, singer-songwriter Richard Walters and multi-instrumentalist & producer Patrick Pearson. \n…the discovery of a filthy word on a Post-it note triggers an-out-of-body romantic reunion; the names of expensive artisan paints as markers of social stratification; never trust a person who won’t offer a sugar lump to a horse; the lifespan of a relationship that begins in a park in June and ends in downpour in September; a vagrant scavenges a living in the central reservations of Britain’s motorway network; the hand that plucks the buttercup still throws a decent uppercut; the Second Coming about as likely as a single-track train arriving on time in the twilight hours of modern western civilization; a room-to-room expedition through the Great Indoors in search of “home”; the infinite swansong of the run-out spiral of an old vinyl album; left to his own devices a jilted lover itemises examples of near-weightlessness… \nSimon Armitage\, Patrick James Pearson and Richard Walters are LYR. LYR is Land Yacht Regatta. Land Yacht Regatta are proud to present their debut album Call In The Crash Team\, the culmination of a triangular collaboration that took shape against a backbeat of social alienation\, a backcloth of austerity politics\, a search for beautiful noises and the uncontainable urge to fuse language and music. An album that gives poetic voice to acts of resistance and surrender\, Call in the Crash Team is a sonogram of small personal victories\, an audio X-ray of momentary emotional capitulations\, and a twenty-first century soundscape that echoes the exquisite ache of day-to-day life\, all the lovely heartbreaks and the painful joys.

SUMMARY:Polly Paulusma at Wrecking Ball Arts Centre
DESCRIPTION:Polly Paulusma heads to Wrecking Ball Arts Centre as part of her Autumn 2022 tour. \nPolly Paulusma follows up her critically-acclaimed 2021 album Invisible Music with The Pivot On Which The World Turns (Wild Sound/OLI 2022)\, affectionately shortened to Pivot. The album marks a return to her singular brand of insightful songs that\, in their subject matter\, roam around the badlands of love\, sex and parenthood\, death and grief\, failure and success\, violence and healing. \nPivot is the fifth studio album — and the ninth release — from this growing indie-folk legend\, whose thought-provoking albums since 2004’s Scissors In My Pocket (OLI 2004) have earned her plaudits from international champions as far flung as Nic Harcourt at KCRW in LA and Michele Manzotti in Italy — as well as homegrown accolades from Mark Radcliffe (BBC Radio 2) and The Guardian. \nPolly is also a producer and label founder — her own label Wild Sound released records from nine other artists before becoming a folk imprint at OLI in 2016. Her songs are marked by intelligent lyrics and surprising melodic turns\, and this new album features cowrites with Kathryn Williams\, David Ford and the novelist Laura Barnett.

SUMMARY:Deborah Bonham / Peter Bullick at Wrecking Ball Arts Centre
DESCRIPTION:The youngest of three children\, Deborah Bonham grew up in a musical family\, where all siblings had an amazing introduction to music. Deborah’s Mom and Dad were music lovers\, regularly playing the music of Benny Goodman and Glenn Miller. They were also fans of renowned trumpeters Harry James and Louis Armstrong and vocalists Mahalia Jackson\, Lena Horne and Frank Sinatra. Deborah’s older brother Michael was a photographer and DJ of Northern Soul and Motown\, her eldest brother John was\, and still is\, considered one of the greatest drummers who ever picked up a pair of sticks. It was Deborah’s two brothers’ love of soul\, blues and rock music that sparked her passion for singing from an early age.  \nSince those early days\, Deborah has established herself as one of the finest blues\, rock and soul singers the UK has produced. She has released a number of critically acclaimed original albums and her outstanding concert performances at the Royal Albert Hall\, London Palladium and the 2018 USA Stars Align Tour with Paul Rodgers and Jeff Beck\, all garnered rave reviews.  \n“Strong voiced\, personable and quite the rock & roll singer. This woman\, Deborah Bonham (the sister of the late Led Zeppelin drummer) earned a standing ovation at the end of her set\, clearly a welcome addition to the tour.” (Stars Align Tour\, Paul Rodgers\, Jeff Beck\, Ann Wilson\, Deborah Bonham\, Holmdel\, New Jersey) – Elmore Magazine \n“Deborah Bonham -The best female vocalist and tightest band we should have been hearing for the last 20 years —An arena- worthy show in a (New York) club!” Carol Miller Q104.3 – Get the Led Out \nBelfast born guitarist Peter Bullick\, lauded by the press for his passionate playing\, paid his dues playing clubs and theatres across the UK and Europe for many years. The constant touring allowed Peter to develop his own style while holding dear guitarist Rory Gallagher and others who were a big influence on his playing. Of all the guitarists that influenced Peter it was Paul Kossoff with whom he connected with the most. It was fate that eventually Peter would meet up with Deborah and form The Deborah Bonham Band. Years later Kossoff’s influence on Peter’s playing made a strong impression on Paul Rodgers\, who selected Peter and the rest of The Deborah Bonham Band to back him on both his Free Spirit tour of the UK in 2017 and the 2018 USA Stars Align Tour.  \n“Guitarist Peter Bullick constantly showed why Paul Rodgers touted him as a replacement for Kossoff should Free ever reform. His bluesy but always economic fills and solos lit up the stage.” – Tight But Loose \nIt was after the 2018 Stars Align Tour that Deborah and Peter signed with the California based Quarto Valley Records. Deborah and Peter wanted to recognise that this was a joint band venture and changed the name from The Deborah Bonham Band to Bonham-Bullick. The new album\, under the new name Bonham-Bullick\, showcases more of Deborah’s powerhouse vocals and Peter’s masterful guitar work\, with one blistering solo after another. This is a Bonham-Bullick songbook of interpretations of some great obscure soul\, blues\, rock and gospel songs spanning seven decades. The Bonham-Bullick album takes you on a journey with songs from amongst others\, O.V. Wright\, Johnnie Taylor\, Ann Peebles\, Bernard Fowler\, Mark Lanegan\, Charles Brown and Betty Harris. Throughout the recording process of the album\, Deborah and Peter have shown a deep respect for the original songs while reaching deep to make each song an exciting new adventure for the listener. After the album was recorded\, it was Deborah’s lifelong friend\, Robert Plant\, who suggested sending the album to Peter Gabriel’s Real World Studios for renowned engineer Tim Oliver to mix and master. The Bonham-Bullick album will be released on Quarto Valley Records in March 2022.  \nBONHAM-BULLICK ‘British Blues Boom’ Live in Concert trailer \n \nwww.deborahbonham.com

SUMMARY:John Verity Band at Wrecking Ball Arts Centre
DESCRIPTION:John Verity is currently one of the most consistent performers on the blues/rock circuit. His previous appearances have included opening for Jimi Hendrix\, Janis Joplin and many others in the USA before time spent as frontman with Argent. \nAfter Argent came off the road John was in demand for recording and guesting with other musicians including Ringo Starr and The Zombies. However\, John missed playing live and once again returned to this some years ago. \nAt the beginning of 2020 John and the band with Roger Inniss on bass and Liam James Gray on drums\, embarked on ‘The JV 50th Anniversary Tour and launched the latest album ‘Passion’. Unfortunately this all came to a halt in March of the same year but now we have re-organised all our previous appearances as the 50th Anniversary Tour re-visited! \nSome audience comments from previous John Verity Band appearances:-\n‘Probably the best blues voice heard at this weekend’s festival.’\n‘This was the performance of the event. John and the band smashed it out of the park!’\n‘And it would have always been difficult to follow the triumphant John Verity Band. He still has the mane of rock hair\, still finds the high notes and still plays both rock and blues guitar with effortless panache.’

SUMMARY:POSTPONED - Curved Air at Wrecking Ball Arts Centre
DESCRIPTION:GIG POSTPONED\nSTATEMENT FROM CURVED AIR \n“It is with great regret that we have to announce that due to a member of the band testing Covid positive this morning\, we have no option but to postpone tomorrow night’s show at Wrecking Ball Arts Centre in Hull. This is most disappointing for everyone concerned but we absolutely must put the safety of the band members\, crew\, local venue staff and not least our audiences first and foremost. We ask ticket holders to retain tickets as we are hopeful it will be possible to reschedule the show to a date the mutually suits both the band and venue. Please stay tuned as regards announcements concerning any of the other upcoming shows.” \n  \nCurved Air is a unique band\, synthesizing an eclectic blend of musical styles into an instantly identifiable sound. Curved Air’s hits include “It Happened Today”\, “Vivaldi”\, “Marie Antoinette” and “Backstreet Luv”. Curved Air founder member vocalist Sonja Kristina leads a skilled and talented new line-up\, which includes returning 1970s member Kirby Gregory\, bringing their unique music to an existing and new fanbase in the 21st Century. \nCurved Air’s concerts and festival appearances continue to thrill a steadily increasing mass of new and old fans worldwide. Their experimental blends of classical themes\, electronic sounds and pop/rock energy and beautiful\, timeless songs are performed with fire and passion and tremendous musicianship. \nConsidered (according to AllMusic) “one of the most dramatically accomplished of all the bands lumped into Britain’s late-’60s prog explosion”\, Curved Air is a pioneering British progressive rock group of musicians from mixed artistic backgrounds. \nThey are famed for their unforgettable live performances and ‘Art Rock’ music – the quasi classical imprints of Terry Riley hooked onto beautiful and demonic violin combined with electronic adventurous synths and interwoven with brilliant guitar wizardry mesmerisingly embroidered by the subliminal and exotic presence of a unique lead singer Sonja Kristina. All these elements elevated them from the underground Roundhouse scene to top the album charts in the early ’70s.

SUMMARY:The Lounge Society in-store gig at Wrecking Ball Music & Books
DESCRIPTION:This acoustic gig celebrating the launch of The Lounge Society’s new album Tired of Liberty (released on August 26) in the intimate surroundings of Wrecking Ball Music & Books is an event not to be missed.  Entry is FREE. \nPlying their own distinct breed of art-punk – taking in fleet-footed guitar and drum motifs\, bite-and-bark vocals and popping electronics – Speedy Wunderground’s The Lounge Society have made quite the reputation for themselves in their short time together. After releasing their debut EP Silk For The Starving to universal acclaim in 2021 (“The Lounge Society are assuredly blazing their own path” – NME) the band toured extensively throughout the UK last Autumn\, performing sold-out\, enthralling headline shows across the country\, before taking their first steps onto European festival stages. This autumn\, they hit the road again\, playing shows that include their biggest Manchester headline so far at Gorilla\, London’s Village Underground\, and a homecoming show at The Trades Club in Hebden Bridge. \n \nReturning for the third time to the studio of Speedy Wunderground’s Dan Carey\, Hebden Bridge’s The Lounge Society are back; this time\, with the mindset of crafting a debut album conceived out of desire\, raised by collaborative muscle-memory\, and kept beating\, by the sacred-heart of  emotional-spirit. \nRecorded over two weeks in November 2021\, Tired of Liberty is a stunningly ubiquitous snapshot of instrumental meltdown\, and timeless adolescence. Keen to uphold the manipulated elasticity of a recorded event\, the majority of the eleven tracks that make up the record (with the exception of ‘Generation Game’\, which saw its beginnings as part of the Speedy Wunderground 7” series\, and was subsequently re-recorded)\, were written either just before\, or throughout the duration of those fortnight sessions. \nA rarity for most bands\, The Lounge Society functions best as a collective entity. With no core-leader\, everything from the sources of inspiration\, to the lyrics themselves\, is handled collaboratively\, and with equal merit; as they strive to create a self-sufficient creative unit\, larger than the individual. Far from a documentation of disenfranchised youth\, Tired of Liberty seeks to overthrow with striking articulation. Stirringly fearless\, it masterfully combines archetypal storytelling\, with as many disparate principles as introspectively possible; capturing the aural shifts in time and attitudes between ‘Generation Game’\, and where we join The Lounge Society now. \nBrimming with anthemic-myriad\, this is the real deal. Genuine urgency from a group of young creatives living and breathing their inaugurated prime\, with breath-taking\, anarchic-proficiency. Whether it’s “lies drenched in sarcasm” (‘Blood Money’)\, or\, the clattering\, riff-screaming irony of ‘Remains’\, The Lounge Society’s deep-rooted inversion towards our “culture of anti-freedom”- the ludicrous excuses man makes for the ceasing of mankind\, is one which is both culturally-associative\, and\, counter-culturally embracing. \nPeriodically awakening the living rebel running skin deep in us all\, ‘No Driver’ is a heart-wrenching masterpiece. With every guitar-laden growl\, it intricately sheds and unveils each layer of humanity until all that remains is skeletal distress\, and intervening frequencies of invigorating-abandon. “The sun is sleeping\, all of the time” yet The Lounge Society are awake and desirous; insatiably hellbent on tearing down failing social-structures\, before the new-dawn seeks to counterattack. \nBe it the self-prophesying hum of the studios ‘Lounge’ recording-light\, or\, the re-configuration of the entire room so the mics moved away from the instruments with each song\, (“we wanted to start with a hard focus and end chaotically”- notes Carey)\, every possible attention to detail was considered in order to honour the core ethos of fulfilled direction. Fervently striving to build an environment that grows bigger with sound and time\, in Tired of Liberty the creative process itself holds as much experimental value\, as the conceptual journey as a whole. \nWhether its personal growth\, banded maturity\, or a hearty combination of the two\, Tired of Liberty is an expertly captured documentation of four young-adults\, at the baptism of their cultural-ignition. After all\, you only get one opportunity at a debut record. “Anything that follows\, is just an evolution from that.”- The Lounge Society. \nThe gig will be followed by a signing and copies of Tired of Liberty will be available to purchase in-store\, subject to availability. \nFor FREE entry\, book a ticket below. \nYou can also pre-order your copy of Tired of Liberty below. Your purchase can be collected in-store at the event.
