SUMMARY:Wreckless Eric
DESCRIPTION:On the eve of his 70th birthday\, and to celebrate the re-publication of his 2003 autobiography A Dysfunctional Success\, Wreckless Eric will be performing\, not in London\, New York\, Tokyo\, Amsterdam\, or any other international hotspot\, but in the city of Kingston Upon Hull. Eric attended the art college in Hull in the nineteen seventies and developed a deep affection for the place. Indeed\, he wrote the classic Whole Wide World there\, sitting on a bench on Cottingham Road on a spring evening in 1974.One of the five sections that make up A Dysfunctional Success is entitled Hull. The re-edition includes lyrics from five songs including Gateway To Europe from his 2018 album Construction Time & Demolition. The song is of course about Hull:They say they’re going to build a bridgeConnecting nowhere in particular with where no one wants to go…His albums encapsulate pop\, bubblegum\, garage trash and psychedelia. His live performances are sonic journeys through time and space. Eric presents himself alone if not simply with electric and acoustic guitars\, and electronics of his own making. For this performance he’ll be featuring songs that illustrate the story\, and of course there’ll be readings from A Dysfunctional Success.“I think I was hoping for insight into the early Stiff Records days\, which I didn’t get. What I got was much better\, and a great deal more interesting: a shambling\, acutely observed\, very funny-sad-true-sharp autobiography…” Neil GaimanIn a world of fly-by-night fakery Wreckless Eric remains a national treasure. Paul Moody – Classic RockGoulden has enjoyed a genuinely extraordinary career. Alexis Petridis – The Guardian \n  \nTickets \nhttps://wreckingballmusic.myshopify.com/products/wreckless-eric-friday-may-17th-2024-8pm-10pm \n

SUMMARY:Outliers - Boo Hewerdine & Jenny Sturgeon
DESCRIPTION:Tickets: £16 \nCreated between their homes in Glasgow and Shetland during 2020/21\, Outliers came to signify an outlet which renowned songwriters Boo Hewerdine and Jenny Sturgeon would never have had the chance to explore otherwise. Meeting up online for an hour every week gave them an opportunity to write songs in a way they’d not done before. Recording at home and sending melodies\, sounds\, ideas to each other provided the space and time to experiment outside of a usual studio setting. The evolution and method of creating this music led them to settle on the name Outliers. \nOutliers will be touring in December 2023 and February 2024\, joined on stage by multi-instrumentalist Grant Anderson. \nThe first half of the gig features songs from Boo and Jenny’s back catalogue. In the second half\, Boo\, Jenny and Grant will perform new music from the album ‘Outliers’\, due for release in Autumn 2023 on Hudson Records. \nBoo Hewerdine – vocals\, guitars \nJenny Sturgeon – vocals\, keys\, synth\, guitar\, samples \nGrant Anderson – vocals\, bass guitar\, synth\, samples \n \n  \n

SUMMARY:Straighten Out
DESCRIPTION:Tickets: £15 \nSTRAIGHTEN OUT are the world’s premier Stranglers tribute band with an extensive set-list that spans two solid hours as they re-create the ‘early years’ sound of The Stranglers\, complete with a Hammond organ and Minimoog synth; the same models used by Mr. Greenfield himself\, back in the day! \nThe growling bass sound and the quirky guitar riffs are all there to be heard as is the dual vocal ‘attack’ from the two frontmen a-la Burnel/Cornwell as they rip through the Stranglers’ classic: ‘Peaches’\, ‘Hanging Around’\, ‘No More Heroes’\, ‘5 Minutes’\, ‘The Raven’\, ‘Walk On By’\, ‘Straighten Out’\, ‘Down In The Sewer’ and many more as they cover the Stranglers’ early classic albums and beyond. \nStraighten Out will take you on a nostalgia trip that transports you back to those raw\, powerful\, exhilarating times when The Stranglers emerged through the quagmire of mediocrity to produce some of the finest music ever written. Straighten Out will put you back in that place! \nBassist Shaggy and keyboard player Mick (‘The Doc’) were together in previous Stranglers tribute band ‘Four More Heroes’ and it was only natural that these two continued on after their demise to form ‘Straighten Out’ given their love of Stranglers music and the desire to keep playing live. They set the platform with the growling bass and swirling keyboard sound so essential to reproducing the authentic Stranglers sound. Joining them are Jet ‘Beets’ Beety on drums and Phil Harvey steps up to give you the ‘Hugh’ element to complete the fearsome foursome. \nStraighten Out are a must-see tribute band. \nStraighten Out – Stranglers Tribute Sat Feb 3rd 2024 8pm-10pm – Wrecking Ball Arts Centre (wreckingballmusic.myshopify.com) \n \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Katie Spencer & Henry Parker
DESCRIPTION:Raised in the East Yorkshire flatlands on the fringes of Hull\, Katie Spencer’s landscape has always been that of open skies and widening rivers. Industry still shapes the city here. The people\, as with the land\, are moulded by tides and stark horizons. Stand in the same place for long enough and you can watch the sun rise over the North Sea and then sink into crop fields\, glowing auburn in late-summer sun. It is this sense of space and movement that flows through Katie Spencer’s music. \nThe songwriting\, and most notably her guitar playing stems from a time when the steel-stringed instrument was truly finding its voice. Artists like Joni Mitchell\, James Taylor and perhaps most evidently Michael Chapman\, flow into her sound\, carrying with them the warmth and idealism of the early 70’s folk and songwriter movements. \nKatie Spencer’s widely celebrated new album\, The Edge of the Land (2022)\, follows her debut release\, Weather Beaten (2019) which was praised for its unique song-craft\, spell-binding musicianship and crystal sonic clarity\, as she brought together fans of music from all backgrounds and walks of life. Delicate and un-rushed\, the ten songs on The Edge of the Land drift by like ships on the horizon\, yet intimacy and introspection still remain. \nThe inclusivity found in her recorded works is most apparent when on stage\, with a personal connection and humour that allows the listener time to appreciate the emotion of the music. Her historical gig list is extensive\, taking in the world-renowned Celtic Connections and Cambridge Folk Festival\, whilst performances with Danny Thompson and Alan Thomson have left audiences in awe of her confidence and craftsmanship. \nAs live music has returned to our world\, we can expect to see Katie Spencer where she belongs once more\, eyes closed\, in the moment\, performing. \n— \n“Her articulate picking\, with suggestions of folk and jazz\, frames intelligently written songs and is the backbone to her music.” Guitarist Magazine \n“One of the most satisfying and spellbinding singer-songwriter collections I’ve encountered in some time.” RnR Magazine ★★★★★ \n“Imaginative imagery supported by compelling music that summons up the best of early 70s folk\, fluently delivered here with its own contemporary power. This is a fine collection of memorable songs by an outstanding writer and musician.” Record Collector \n“A timeless English folk album\, perfect for the still calm of a Sunday morning.” Shindig! \n“Katie Spencer sits gracefully in a vocal nook between Sandy Denny\, Linda Thompson and\, to conjure a name we hear less often these days\, Bridget St John.” Prog Magazine \n“The way Katie plays is never contrived\, showy or imitative; it sounds true … a world-class folk guitarist” – fRoots \n“Katie’s guitar playing has echoes of my dear friend the late great Bert Jansch. Like a musical weaver she threads her poetic lyrics through the guitar’s strings and produces little tapestries of song” – Ralph McTell \nwww.katiespencer.net \nhttps://www.facebook.com/katiespencermusic/ \nhttps://twitter.com/KRSpencerMusic \nhttps://www.instagram.com/katiespencermusic/ \n  \nHenry Parker’s contemporary take on folk\, which he explores via thoughtful yet deeply accomplished guitar playing\, unfurls and moves much like the landscape itself – mirroring the unpredictable\, yet beautifully flowing\, rolling hills and valleys of his home\, the Aire Valley in West Yorkshire. \nHenry’s musical roots go back to a self appointed upbringing in rock and heavy metal. However\, enthralled by the ethereal playing of Bert Jansch and Nick Drake\, finger-picking and open tunings rapidly became the essence of his sound. The result is a strain of informed\, progressive folk music found nowhere else. \nHenry has recorded 2 albums: the eco-conscious ‘Silent Spring’ (2019) and ‘Lammas Fair’ (2021)\, bringing him to the forefront of the progressive folk music world. \n“His relaxed vocals and songwriting are as warm and open as his tunings” 8/10 Uncut Magazine \n“What Parker does so effectively is to blend ancient with early-70’s and modern styles” Mojo ★★★★ \n“Original material and traditional songs create an immersive and mellifluous world in which both the peace and isolation of nature are unfurled evoked through subtle arrangements” Prog Magazine \n“Focussing on the seasons is an eternal feature of English folk music and the tradition is well tended here.” Shindig! ★★★★ \n“Channelling the ghosts of Jansch and Renbourn through his fingertips\, the fluid playing and emotive singing of Yorkshire-born Henry Parker evokes the spirit of the early-60’s folk revival as if it were yesterday.” RnR Magazine ★★★★★ \n“We can look forward to more from this impressive young talent who is both steeped in and helping to continue the English Folk Revival” Folk London \n“Precision guitar playing…effortless use of loop pedals\, nice to see an unsigned folk musician playing to such a high level” FATEA \n“A really excellent young guitarist/ songwriter”  Steve Tilston

SUMMARY:Helen McCookerybook with support by Graham Graham Beck
DESCRIPTION:Helen McCookerybook’s songs cover everything from the social impact of new technology to wry observations about relationships. Now a solo guitarist/vocalist influenced by Linda Lewis\, Nick Drake and Jake Thackray\, her musical journey started as a bass player in a Brighton punk band in the late 1970s. Her previous bands The Chefs and Helen and the Horns were regulars on BBC Radio 1’s John Peel show; nowadays Radio London’s Gary Crowley and BBC6’s Gideon Coe play her new music. Her latest CD is Drawing on my Dreams Drawing on my Dreams\, by Helen McCookerybook \n  \nGRAHAM GRAHAM BECK – singer/songwriter of ‘quirky’ Surreal ditties that address the important things in life\, such as cake\, garden gnomes & flying saucers. Ex-art student\, ex-life drawing tutor\, ex-stockroom assistant (& possibly a few other ‘ex’s’ as well)\, he ploughs his course through the subjects that other musicians leave well alone – & who would blame them. But as GGB says\, “Someone’s got to do it!”.\n\nOne man & his keyboard – it’s a Casio at the moment – with auto-accompaniment\, & a few stage props\, will leap(?!) onto stage at Wrecking Ball & ‘have a go’ at entertaining the audience with wit & err\, wisdom. Ten solo albums to his name\, he has previously worked with Wreckless Eric\, been in numerous London bands in the 1980’s\, & supported such acts as The Crazy World Of Arthur Brown\, Tom Robinson & Helen McCookerybook (this will be the fourth occasion). For a few years\, he has been part of Hull’s Comedy Festival Fringe\, as well as the Freedom Festival\, with his comedic routines & silliness. Several songs have appeared/been broadcast on BBC6 Music (via Tom Robinson) over the past few years\, plus dare-I-say-it\, there have been two appearances on BGT. Hmm…\n\nHas to be seen to be believed (or not).
