SUMMARY:Not A Rock-Doc - Sharks Film Screening / Q and A with Steve 'Snips' Parsons
DESCRIPTION:Back in 1972\, Sharks quickly soared to new heights in the rock world\, a record\ndeal from the coolest label\, superstar management\, and a shark-shaped car. But\na devastating crash and drug problems saw them sink beneath the waves. Now\,\nthey reunite\, embarking on a 21st-century odyssey filled with pain\, dark humour\,\nand unexpected acts of heroism.\nThe film explores the complex dynamics of an iconic band’s journey\, from the\nhighs of their resurgence to the lows of their struggles. The film NOT A ROCK-DOC delves into the compelling story of a revered cult band from the 1970s\, as\nthey embark on a mission to revive their music and legacy in the digital age. We\nfollow the band on their promotional tour for the album KILLERS OF THE DEEP\nas they navigate the pressures faced by ‘men of a certain age’ striving to deliver\nelectrifying performances across the UK\, Japan\, and Europe.\nAccompanied by the camera crew\, they are joined by Toshio Nomura\, a\npassionate fan from Osaka\, Japan\, also documenting their journey with his miniDV camera setup. Toshio becomes an endearing third protagonist in the film\,\nshowcasing his unwavering dedication to the band.\nWe witness the gripping and hilarious portrayal of the Sharks revival as the film\ntakes us through the ups and downs of the band’s chaotic journey as they\nconfront the harsh realities of the modern music industry. We experience their\nstruggles\, triumphs\, and the universal challenges faced by creatives worldwide.\nThe film unfolds like a slow-motion car crash\, packed with hilarious and cringeworthy moments. Picture this: A former Sex Pistol jumps ship\, leaving the band\nscrambling. Chris Spedding then joins forces with Bryan Ferry for a four-month\nworld tour to make ends meet. Meanwhile\, Snips is determined to salvage the\nsituation with another tour\, but they find themselves playing to almost empty\nhalls and even performing at an ageing fan’s birthday party. Brace yourself for\nreal-life ‘Spinal Tap’ situations that will have you in stitches as the band battles\nhumiliation\, condescension\, and frustration at every turn. It’s a rollercoaster of\nlaughs\, awkwardness\, and the kind of craziness only rock & roll can deliver.\nGet ready to be entertained\, moved\, and inspired as NOT A ROCK-DOC\ncaptures the gritty essence of the 21st Century Sharks revival. Through powerful\nstorytelling\, intimate access\, and a healthy dose of laughter\, this documentary\nreveals the enduring power of artistic expression and the unyielding passion that\nfuels the artistic spirit and why we love music.\nThe finished film is a uniquely British story of failure and grace under pressure –\nwith some dynamic stage performances and high quality music…\n…but it’s not a Rock-Doc. \nTICKETS \nNot A Rock-Doc – Sharks Film Screening / Q and A Fri Sept 6th 7-30pm – – Wrecking Ball Arts Centre (wreckingballmusic.myshopify.com) \n

SUMMARY:The Blow Monkeys
DESCRIPTION:The Blow Monkeys are unique with a career spanning over 40 years. Always making new music\, always stretching their own musical boundaries. With worldwide hits such as the classics “Digging Your Scene” and “It Doesn’t Have To Be This Way”\, they became household names but there was always so much more going on with these soulful troubadours Their relentless desire to move forward\, to collaborate\, to be socially engaged and to have something to contribute. Back in the 80’s they worked with people as varied as Curtis Mayfield\, Paul Weller\, Cheb Khaled and even Jamaican Toaster EEK-a-Mouse! “No band since The Clash in their early 80’s heyday had attempted to act as a sounding board for such politically engaged\, eclectic music” Dr Robert even took time out to release one of the UK’s first homegrown ‘house’ records “Wait”\, his top 5 duet with Chicago soul diva Kym Maselle. And so the journey continues. Reformed in 2008 The Blow Monkeys have been incredibly productive releasing eight new albums and playing hundreds of concerts. The latest album due out in May 2024 on Glasgow independent label LNFG is called “Together/Alone” and comes on the back of a new compilation “Time Storm- Greatest Hits Vol 2” which covers some of the extraordinary new music they have made. These Monkeys continue to evolve. From their beginnings on the underground club scene right through to their appearance on the biggest selling soundtrack of all time “Dirty Dancing” (You Don’t Own Me) and beyond. Long may they swing. \n  \nTICKETS : \nhttps://wreckingballmusic.myshopify.com/products/the-blow-monkeys-thursday-july-18th-2024-8pm-10pm

SUMMARY:High Fade
DESCRIPTION:  \nOn a three-man crusade to set dance floors alight with their inimitable brand of razor-sharp funk and disco\, Edinburgh’s High Fade captured the attention of a global audience with their music amassing over 30 million views and streams within six months of their first release and\, in the process\, gaining recognition from music heavyweights including Jack Black\, Cypress Hill\, Deep Purple’s Glenn Hughes\, and Brad Wilk from Rage Against The Machine \n  \nFor a band that only started mid-2018\, to already have the support of artists including Emeli Sandé\, David Paitch and even Peter Andre is a testament to not only their raw musical talent but also the relentless drive and ambition that has seen the band play over 1000 gigs in the last four years. With a forward-thinking approach to grassroots promotion\, High Fade have been able to capture the magic of their live performances with a proactive presence on social media and create multiple viral moments for their tracks “Sharpen Up”\, “Burnin”\, and “Burnt Toast and Coffee” that feed the appetite of new fans across the world. \n  \nWith a more traditional offline approach towards learning their craft and perfecting the High Fade sound\, Harry Valentino (guitar/vocals)\, Oliver Sentance (bass) and Calvin Davidson (drums/vocals) developed their infectious style whilst feeding off the unpredictable crowd interactions that come with street shows and busking. It’s this unmatched live energy that sets their performances apart and results in the impressive musical display that comes from just three musicians working together. Indeed\, with other acts in the same genre often having upwards of six members\, being a three-piece could be a limiting factor for many\, but for High Fade it has become an integral part of the band’s DNA\, allowing them to put on a show that supersedes anything their fans have experienced before. \n  \nFrom the old-school soul and Motown of John Legend and Barry White to the classic rock of bands like Kiss and Motley Crue\, High Fade’s sound draws on the musical tastes and experiences of all three members\, extracting the best bits of each and serving the funky\, disco-inspired results up live on stage. Launching their own label\, RPN Records\, has allowed the band to take control of their output with monthly singles planned for the foreseeable and a forthcoming official remix package for “Sharpen Up”. Featuring club-ready interpretations from Opolopo and Oden & Fatzo that highlight the group’s passion for electronic music\, this tangible connection to the dance music scene provides the perfect opportunity for the High Fade sound to make the transition into the setlists of house and disco DJs. \n  \nBy their own admission\, “High Fade doesn’t work unless there’s a crowd\, a dance floor and people that want to get down” – it’s reassuring then that their gig diary is stacked\, with dates across the UK and Scotland confirmed throughout summer\, and a big US tour in place for later this year following their signing with leading US booking agency\, Wasserman. Throw in partnerships with brands including Ernie Ball\, Blackstar Amps and Suhr Guitars and it’s clear that the whole industry is backing the meteoric rise of High Fade\, and so should you. \nTICKETS: \nhttps://wreckingballmusic.myshopify.com/products/high-fade-sat-july-6th-2024-8pm-10pm

SUMMARY:Wreckless Eric
DESCRIPTION:On the eve of his 70th birthday\, and to celebrate the re-publication of his 2003 autobiography A Dysfunctional Success\, Wreckless Eric will be performing\, not in London\, New York\, Tokyo\, Amsterdam\, or any other international hotspot\, but in the city of Kingston Upon Hull. Eric attended the art college in Hull in the nineteen seventies and developed a deep affection for the place. Indeed\, he wrote the classic Whole Wide World there\, sitting on a bench on Cottingham Road on a spring evening in 1974.One of the five sections that make up A Dysfunctional Success is entitled Hull. The re-edition includes lyrics from five songs including Gateway To Europe from his 2018 album Construction Time & Demolition. The song is of course about Hull:They say they’re going to build a bridgeConnecting nowhere in particular with where no one wants to go…His albums encapsulate pop\, bubblegum\, garage trash and psychedelia. His live performances are sonic journeys through time and space. Eric presents himself alone if not simply with electric and acoustic guitars\, and electronics of his own making. For this performance he’ll be featuring songs that illustrate the story\, and of course there’ll be readings from A Dysfunctional Success.“I think I was hoping for insight into the early Stiff Records days\, which I didn’t get. What I got was much better\, and a great deal more interesting: a shambling\, acutely observed\, very funny-sad-true-sharp autobiography…” Neil GaimanIn a world of fly-by-night fakery Wreckless Eric remains a national treasure. Paul Moody – Classic RockGoulden has enjoyed a genuinely extraordinary career. Alexis Petridis – The Guardian \n  \nTickets \nhttps://wreckingballmusic.myshopify.com/products/wreckless-eric-friday-may-17th-2024-8pm-10pm \n
