SUMMARY:Atomic Rooster
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS:  Atomic Rooster – Sat Jan 11th 2025 8pm-10pm – Wrecking Ball Arts Centre (wreckingballmusic.myshopify.com)\n\nSince reforming in 2016\, with the blessing of  band founder Vincent Crane’s widow\, ATOMIC ROOSTER \, with their early 70’s heyday guitar player STEVE ‘BOLTZ’ BOLTON at the helm the band have gone from strength to strength playing scores of festivals in the UK and Europe and frequently touring to a steadily growing fanbase.\n\nAside from their two 70’s UK and USA chart hits\, DEVIL’S ANSWER and TOMORROW NIGHT\, ‘Rooster are also much acclaimed for at least two classic proto-metal-gothic-prog albums in the shape of the legendary ‘DEATH WALKS BEHIND YOU’ album from 1970 and ‘IN THE HEARING OF…’ released the following year.  Both these albums plus the following ‘MADE IN ENGLAND’ with Chris Farlowe on vocals and Steve Bolton on guitar (not to mention SPINAL TAP’s legendary drummer RICK PARNELL on drums!) have firmly established ATOMIC ROOSTER at the vanguard of British Progressive music.\n\nThe current line-up draw heavily on these early classics as well as new material from their forthcoming album ‘CIRCLE THE SUN’ to be released in the Summer of 2024 and debuted live on their July – August European tour.\n\nPERSONEL\n STEVE ‘BOLTZ’ BOLTON – Guitar and Vocals – Steve’s CV is pretty epic. Successfully auditioning as a teenager for the Atomic Rooster job\, following that he played with – in no particular order – Belinda Carlisle\, 6’3”\, Vampire Bats\, Scott Walker\, Paul Youngs Royal Family\, including playing on and touring behind the 80’s mega-hit album NO PARLEZ. He toured the world playing guitar with THE WHO for two years and can claim to have been deafened by JOHN ENTWISTLE’S vast bass rig. He’s played with Iggy Pop\, Chris Isaak\, Lemmy\, Bob Dylan\, blues legend HUBERT SUMLIN\, Richard Strange\, he’s toured America with John Otway\, jammed with Keith Richards and Steve Jordan. He currently plays with his own band DEAD MAN’S CORNER\, does many solo shows\, is a talented and humourous raconteur and has taught guitar and stagecraft at the School of Rock in London.\n\nADRIAN GAUTREY – Keyboards and Vocals- Adrian is cut from superior cloth to most musicians. A profoundly gifted musician and singer\, Adrian is well beyond proficient on keys\, guitar and pedal steel. He regularly tours with\, among many others\, USA blues chanteuse SARI SCHORR\, Hollywood A-lister KEIFER SUTHERLAND\, Huey Morgan’s FUN LOVING CRIMINALS\, Liverpool legend PETE WYLIE. Last year he played Hammond and piano on ROBIN TROWER’S most recent album. He plays many\, many sessions as well as shows with his own ADRIAN GAUTREY BAND. Since the departure in 2023 of Peter French he has taken over the vocal role in ATOMIC ROOSTER to great effect\n\nSHUG SPENCER – Bass. Joined Rooster when they first got back together in 2016. Was in the late DENNY LAINE’S band\, played with the NEW AMEN CORNER\, worked with world class drummer GED LYNCH ( Peter Gabriel\, Goldfrapp\, Clannad\, Black Grape\, Dave Gilmour\, Imagined Village and many more. Bass player with the lamented HIDING MAGPIES\, FRUITLESS FOREST\, THE MIGHTY REVELATORS\, THE CHEATING HEARTS and many\, many more.\n\nPAUL EVERETT -DRUMS – Paul is pretty much Liverpool’s busiest drummer – 300 shows a year is nothing to this guy! A professional since leaving school\, a resident a Liverpool’s uber-famous CAVERN\, Paul propels The Mighty ATOMIC ROOSTER with great style and elan.

SUMMARY:Katie Spencer + Henry Parker
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS:    Katie Spencer + Henry Parker Fri Dec 20th 8pm-10pm – Wrecking Ball Arts Centre (wreckingballmusic.myshopify.com) \nRaised in the East Yorkshire flatlands on the fringes of Hull\, Katie Spencer’s landscape has always been that of open skies and widening rivers. Industry still shapes the city here. The people\, as with the land\, are moulded by tides and stark horizons. Stand in the same place for long enough and you can watch the sun rise over the North Sea and then sink into crop fields\, glowing auburn in late-summer sun. It is this sense of space and movement that flows through Katie Spencer’s music. \nThe songwriting\, and most notably her guitar playing stems from a time when the steel-stringed instrument was truly finding its voice. Artists like Joni Mitchell\, James Taylor and perhaps most evidently Michael Chapman\, flow into her sound\, carrying with them the warmth and idealism of the early 70’s folk and songwriter movements. \nKatie Spencer’s widely celebrated new album\, The Edge of the Land (2022)\, follows her debut release\, Weather Beaten (2019) which was praised for its unique song-craft\, spell-binding musicianship and crystal sonic clarity\, as she brought together fans of music from all backgrounds and walks of life. Delicate and un-rushed\, the ten songs on The Edge of the Land drift by like ships on the horizon\, yet intimacy and introspection still remain. \nThe inclusivity found in her recorded works is most apparent when on stage\, with a personal connection and humour that allows the listener time to appreciate the emotion of the music. Her historical gig list is extensive\, taking in the world-renowned Celtic Connections and Cambridge Folk Festival\, whilst performances with Danny Thompson and Alan Thomson have left audiences in awe of her confidence and craftsmanship. \nAs live music has returned to our world\, we can expect to see Katie Spencer where she belongs once more\, eyes closed\, in the moment\, performing. \n— \n“Her articulate picking\, with suggestions of folk and jazz\, frames intelligently written songs and is the backbone to her music.” Guitarist Magazine \n“One of the most satisfying and spellbinding singer-songwriter collections I’ve encountered in some time.” RnR Magazine ★★★★★ \n“Imaginative imagery supported by compelling music that summons up the best of early 70s folk\, fluently delivered here with its own contemporary power. This is a fine collection of memorable songs by an outstanding writer and musician.” Record Collector \n“A timeless English folk album\, perfect for the still calm of a Sunday morning.” Shindig! \n“Katie Spencer sits gracefully in a vocal nook between Sandy Denny\, Linda Thompson and\, to conjure a name we hear less often these days\, Bridget St John.” Prog Magazine \n“The way Katie plays is never contrived\, showy or imitative; it sounds true … a world-class folk guitarist” – fRoots \n“Katie’s guitar playing has echoes of my dear friend the late great Bert Jansch. Like a musical weaver she threads her poetic lyrics through the guitar’s strings and produces little tapestries of song” – Ralph McTell \n  Henry Parker’s contemporary take on folk\, which he explores via thoughtful yet deeply\naccomplished guitar playing\, unfurls and moves much like the landscape itself – mirroring the\nunpredictable\, yet beautifully flowing\, rolling hills and valleys of his native county of West\nYorkshire.\nParker’s musical roots go back to a self appointed upbringing in prog-rock and metal. However\,\nenthralled at the age of 20 by the ethereal playing of Bert Jansch and Nick Drake\, finger-picking\nand open tunings rapidly became the essence of his sound. The result is a strain of informed\,\nprogressive folk music found nowhere else.\nHenry has recorded 2 albums: the eco-conscious ‘Silent Spring’ (2019) and ‘Lammas Fair’ (2021)\,\nbringing him to the forefront of the progressive folk music world. In 2023 he curated and recorded\non behalf of the American label Tompkins Square Records\, bringing together a tribute album to\nMichael Chapman\, one of his most important musical influences.\nPress Quotes\n“His relaxed vocals and songwriting are as warm and open as his tunings” 8/10 Uncut\n“What Parker does so effectively is to blend ancient with early-70’s and modern styles”\nMojo ★★★★\n“Original material and traditional songs create an immersive and mellifluous world in which both\nthe peace and isolation of nature are unfurled evoked through subtle arrangements”\nProg Magazine\n“Focussing on the seasons is an eternal feature of English folk music and the tradition is well\ntended here.” – Shindig! ★★★★

SUMMARY:Nick Smart - David Bowie The Collector Book Talk
DESCRIPTION:  \nTICKETS:    Nick Smart – David Bowie The Collector Book Talk Fri Dec 6th 7-30pm-9- – Wrecking Ball Arts Centre \nWas Bowie an aloof and unavailable artist\, or a ‘Starman’ who descended to bring good news to the masses and a chameleon? This book presents Bowie as revealed by the testimony of his closest friends and partners\, a Bowie with humour\, grace and humility and a highly focused Bowie – a borrower of ideas combining disparate ideas from multiple sources creating new visions. \n‘[I’m] a tasteful thief. The only art I’ll ever study is stuff that I can steal from.’ David Bowie\, 1976 \n‘To not be modest about it\, you’ll find that with only a couple of exceptions\, most of the musicians that I’ve worked with have done their best work by far with me.’  David Bowie\, 2002 \nIf it’s true that most musicians who worked with Bowie did their best work with him\, is it also the case that Bowie’s work benefited enormously from the ideas and creativity of the people he surrounded himself with? As he himself said\, ‘It’s not what you steal\, it’s how you use it!’ \nA study of the people from whom Bowie borrowed from is long overdue. Bowie’s own genius is beyond question\, but Nick Smart teases out the elements on which Bowie built his success. His profound sense of artifice\, his ability to tap into the zeitgeist of his times and his gift for gathering ideas and influences from a variety of sources and rearranging them to produce not only new perspectives but also brand-new ideas made him the artist he became. Having interviewed dozens of David Bowie’s friends and collaborators as joint editor of David Bowie Glamour magazine\, Nick finds himself with an enviable perspective about what – and who – made the David Bowie that is celebrated worldwide today. He describes the influences that Bowie picked up on and examines the creative ideas drawn from those he surrounded himself with to produce a unique portrait of a unique star and the myriad ideas that inspired him. \n\nNick Smart is joint editor and designer of the popular fanzine\, David Bowie Glamour. He has been a fan of David Bowie since 1979 and has interviewed and written articles on many of Bowie’s collaborators. He jointly curated the David Bowie World Fan Convention in Liverpool\, 2022 and New York 2023 and through his Fanzine and Convention has created a substantial following of Bowie fans on social media. \nNick will be in conversation with Rupert Creed

SUMMARY:The Unthanks
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS :  The Unthanks In Winter – Hull Theatres \nWhen December draws near\, The Unthanks will release and tour their new doable album ‘In Winter’ – a dream-like winter fantasia\, embracing both the dark and the light in the most ritualistic of seasons. \nMoving in and out of focus – like a memory – a bittersweet hymnal to our shared winter experience. Echoes of winter tunes known throughout the western world\, mix with the traditional and the newly written\, all passed with great care and love through The Unthanks filter. \n‘In Winter’ is an abstract new work that captures the warmth and nostalgia of the festive season\, the chill and darkness of the winter months\, and the reflective ritualisms of the turn of the year; the end and beginning of the circle of life. You will hear what a Tyneside band playing a German Christmas song in the style of The Beach Boys sounds like! A Spanish carol performed by English folkies through the filter of Tom Waits. A newly written tribute to the NHS. An abstract take on ‘A Ceremony of Carols’ by Benjamin Britten. Traditional wassails and old stories coloured with folk noir and traces of Vincent Guaraldi’s ‘Merry Christmas Charlie Brown’. \n“There are few times when you discover a band and they stalk immediately to the heart of everything you love and hold dear.” – Maxine Peake \n“They run from the very root of folk music to the very tip of the branch.” – Elvis Costello \n“It’s quite a rare thing now. They’ve really got everything you could want from music. And I’m very fussy.” – Robert Wyatt \n“Few of their contemporaries\, within both folk music and the wider artistic spectrum\, have such a keenly-honed ability to locate in a song the emotional essence that can\, in just a single phrase or vocal elision\, cut one to the quick.” – The Independent \n“The Unthanks have covered a lot of ground in the past decade and watching them evolve over this period has been truly inspiring.” – Phillip Selway (Radiohead) \n“It hits you in your soul rather than your head. I love them.” – Adrian Edmondson \n“If there was such a thing still as having a favourite band like in the old days\, I’d say they were my favourite band.” – Paul Morley

SUMMARY:High Fade
DESCRIPTION:  \nTICKETS:  High Fade – Thursday Nov 28th 2024 8pm-10pm – Wrecking Ball Arts Centre (wreckingballmusic.myshopify.com) \nOn a three-man crusade to set dance floors alight with their inimitable brand of razor-sharp funk and disco\, Edinburgh’s High Fade captured the attention of a global audience with their music amassing over 30 million views and streams within six months of their first release and\, in the process\, gaining recognition from music heavyweights including Jack Black\, Cypress Hill\, Deep Purple’s Glenn Hughes\, and Brad Wilk from Rage Against The Machine \n\nFor a band that only started mid-2018\, to already have the support of artists including Emeli Sandé\, David Paitch and even Peter Andre is a testament to not only their raw musical talent but also the relentless drive and ambition that has seen the band play over 1000 gigs in the last four years. With a forward-thinking approach to grassroots promotion\, High Fade have been able to capture the magic of their live performances with a proactive presence on social media and create multiple viral moments for their tracks “Sharpen Up”\, “Burnin”\, and “Burnt Toast and Coffee” that feed the appetite of new fans across the world. \n\nWith a more traditional offline approach towards learning their craft and perfecting the High Fade sound\, Harry Valentino (guitar/vocals)\, Oliver Sentance (bass) and Calvin Davidson (drums/vocals) developed their infectious style whilst feeding off the unpredictable crowd interactions that come with street shows and busking. It’s this unmatched live energy that sets their performances apart and results in the impressive musical display that comes from just three musicians working together. Indeed\, with other acts in the same genre often having upwards of six members\, being a three-piece could be a limiting factor for many\, but for High Fade it has become an integral part of the band’s DNA\, allowing them to put on a show that supersedes anything their fans have experienced before. \n\nFrom the old-school soul and Motown of John Legend and Barry White to the classic rock of bands like Kiss and Motley Crue\, High Fade’s sound draws on the musical tastes and experiences of all three members\, extracting the best bits of each and serving the funky\, disco-inspired results up live on stage. Launching their own label\, RPN Records\, has allowed the band to take control of their output with monthly singles planned for the foreseeable and a forthcoming official remix package for “Sharpen Up”. Featuring club-ready interpretations from Opolopo and Oden & Fatzo that highlight the group’s passion for electronic music\, this tangible connection to the dance music scene provides the perfect opportunity for the High Fade sound to make the transition into the setlists of house and disco DJs. \n\nBy their own admission\, “High Fade doesn’t work unless there’s a crowd\, a dance floor and people that want to get down” – it’s reassuring then that their gig diary is stacked\, with dates across the UK and Scotland confirmed throughout summer\, and a big US tour in place for later this year following their signing with leading US booking agency\, Wasserman. Throw in partnerships with brands including Ernie Ball\, Blackstar Amps and Suhr Guitars and it’s clear that the whole industry is backing the meteoric rise of High Fade\, and so should you.

SUMMARY:Soft Machine
DESCRIPTION:Since arriving on the music scene in the first wave of 1960s psychedelia\, the name Soft Machine has become synonymous with musical experimentation\, instrumental virtuosity\, and inspired creativity all animated by a truly adventurous\, progressive spirit. Although the band’s personnel has changed over the years\, their commitment has remained consistent. Some of the very brightest stars in the British jazz firmament have served in the ranks of this revered musical institution. Robert Wyatt\, Mike Ratledge\, Elton Dean\, Hugh Hopper\, Karl Jenkins\, John Marshall\, Roy Babbington\, Allan Holdsworth\, John Etheridge\, Theo Travis\, Kevin Ayers\, Daevid Allen\, Andy Summers\, Jack Bruce\, Gary Husband\, and many others\, have all focused their own unique musicality to help shape the band’s sound and personality. \nThe current lineup (John Etheridge\, Theo Travis\, Fred Baker and Asaf Sirkis) continues to defy categorization. Their latest album\, Other Doors\, sees them move seamlessly between hardcore improvisation\, pop-tinged ebullience\, muscular rock\, and visceral jazz along with shimmering electronica and ambient overtones. Its release in 2023 is the end of an era as the last studio session with legend John Marshall\, who joined the group in 1972 and sadly died in 2023 at the age of 82.This now leaves John Etheridge\, who joined the group in 1975\, as the last surviving member of the group with roots in Soft Machine’s 1970s heyday. \nTICKETS: \nSoft Machine – Thursday Nov 21st 8pm-10pm – Wrecking Ball Arts Centre (wreckingballmusic.myshopify.com) \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Roland Gift & The Blacks
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS :  Roland Gift & The Blacks Sat Nov 9th 2024 8pm-10pm – Wrecking Ball Arts Centre (wreckingballmusic.myshopify.com) \nAt one time picked by People Magazine as one of their 50 most beautiful people Roland Gift\ncame dramatically to attention with the release of the first Fine Young Cannibals album. His high\,\nsoaring voice was immediately recognisable\, his style being based both in classic soul singers and\nin modern techniques that provided him an edge. It was with the second FYC album four years\nlater\, however\, that the band began to break internationally\, with “She Drives Me Crazy” being\nheard everywhere\, in movies\, on television\, on the radio.\nGift spent the earlier part of his life in Birmingham then Hull. He entered music first as a\nsaxophonist with punk band Blue Kitchen\, moving on from there to the Acrylic Victims\, eventually\njoining Andy Cox and David Steel after the disintegration of The Beat sent them in search of a\nvocalist.\nRecently Gift has written 2 plays and a monologue for the BBC’s radio 4. The monologue\,\nSparkhill\, recalls the area of Birmingham Roland was born and grew up in. The plays Return to\nVegas and A Punks Progress are inspired by his coming of age in Hull.\nGift’s professional career has taken him from stage to screen and back again\, as his fans around\nthe world await the release of next project.

SUMMARY:Nick Harper
DESCRIPTION:Nick Harper appears at Wrecking Ball Arts Centre\, Hull\, presented by Loudhailer and Outsider Artists. \n  \nNick is back\, on tour and back to Wrecking Ball Arts Centre in Hull with his most eagerly anticipated new album to date: ‘Earth Day Blue’. \n  \nRecorded in Abbey Road Studio 2 on Earth Day 2024\, ‘Earth Day Blue’ is the 14th studio album release from Nick Harper\, the wildly talented and much loved singer-songwriter. With John Leckie in the producer’s chair (Stone Roses\, Radiohead\, Muse etc.) and Tchad Blake mixing (Tom Waits\, Crowded House\, Peter Gabriel etc.)\, the album is a flash mob of high calibre talent assembled for a few hours’ collaboration in a very special space. \n  \nBut this was not the first time Nick and John had been in session together in Studio 2. It was way back in 1973\, in the very same room\, that Nick was given his ‘big break’ in the world of music. The duo first ‘worked’ together when Nick\, aged 8\, recorded his first ever songs with John whilst Nick’s father Roy was recording his own seminal album ‘Lifemask’ with Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin. So the circle has been squared and the journey is complete! \n  \n‘Earth Day Blue’ is peppered with acoustic ear-worms written with a Studio 2 Beatlesque approach of short\, immediate songs\, but with the added brio of a group of studio attendees sometimes driven to sing along to Nick’s guitar and voice\, adding a party atmosphere to the day. Along the way\, Nick displays all his (un)usual talents\, from his trademark virtuoso string-bending guitar playing and references to the time of his previous session with John on the paean to Joni Mitchell ‘Joni If Only…’ to his penchant for prose poems when describing the scene at Abbey Road in the 70s in ‘The Lady in the Fur Coat’. \n  \nThe recording captures what John says is the magic of a live performance in a controlled recording environment\, though\, in a space such as this\, dripping with portent and legacy (on a personal level for the two as well as to a worldwide community of Abbey Road fanatics) there is a tangible\, added depth of poignancy and emotion underlying the album. For Nick Harper fans and for new fans alike\, it is all here in unadorned beauty\, a recording that witnesses a solo artist without dilution or compromise\, nor studio trickery or production prop\, having a great day performing in one of the most hallowed rooms on the planet. \n  \nExpect a first set from the new album and a second tour-de-force set from Nick’s incredible back catalogue. \n  \nAs Rob Adams in the Glasgow Herald declared: “Be there or be denied a life-affirming experience”. \n  \nDoors: 7:30. \nTickets: £17.50 from Wrecking Ball Arts Centre at this link: \nNick Harper – Sun Oct 13th 2024 8pm-10pm – Wrecking Ball Arts Centre (wreckingballmusic.myshopify.com) \n  \nReviews: \n  \n‘One of the finest guitarists of his generation\, the Bard of Wiltshire’ Mojo \n  \n‘Acoustic Hendrix!’ Guitar Magazine \n  \n‘Hey\, the boy is good!’ Robert Plant \n  \n‘That boy is too good.’ Bert Jansch

SUMMARY:Kathryn Williams & Withered Hand
DESCRIPTION: TICKETS:     \n\nKathryn Williams & Withered Hand Sun Oct 6th 7-30pm-9-30pm \n  \n“As befits her multi-arts background\, Williams’ songs scan like short stories” – MOJO \n  \n“Kathryn Williams has never made a bad record” – Clash Magazine \n  \n“Thank heavens for Withered Hand\, who plies us with gorgeous pop solace and punchlines” – The Quietus \n  \n“He’s up there with fellow Scots Belle and Sebastian; his tunes full of warm\, woozy singsong charm” – Rolling Stone \n  \nProlific singer-songwriter Kathryn Williams and recently reinvigorated troubadour Dan Willson (aka Withered Hand) have announced a collaboration album\, ‘Willson Williams’\, out April 26th via One Little Independent Records. \n  \n‘Willson Williams’ witnesses the meeting of two likeminded musicians who’ve built their successful\, independent careers on inventive folk instrumentation\, reflective and sincere lyricism\, and not a small amount of self-deprecation. Their modest confessionals\, written poetically and over nostalgic and atmospheric melodies\, are as relatable as ever\, and together they find new ways to unpack their feelings. \n  \nOne overarching theme on the album is that of grief\, when the writing process saw them both\, tragically\, in mourning for separate loved ones; Dan for his brother Karl and his friend Scott Hutchinson of Frightened Rabbit\, and Kathryn for her friend\, comedian and BBC Radio 4 presenter Jeremy Hardy. They explain that “the initial premise and starting point for us was discussions and open conversations on bereavement. We’d both recently lost friends who were also in the public eye\, and we talked about the strange place between personal loss and the communal grieving of a public figure”. Contrastingly\, the music on ‘Willson Williams’ is warm\, heartfelt and even cheerful\, an opposing nature that is completely in keeping with both their humour and candidness. \n  \nKathryn and Dan met in 2019 in a Spiegeltent at Edinburgh International Book Festival curated by Hollie McNish and Michael Pedersen. They began making music together\, travelling for writing sessions at each other’s homes\, and became fast friends. “We talk and spend time together” says Dan\, “and then it’s almost like the next time we sit down to write\, a synthesis of late-night kitchen conversations become distilled into the songs. It’s hard to separate who’s done what and where the songs sprang from. The writing and the friendship with Kath rejuvenated my own songwriting process enough to be able to do this”. \n  \nThe record was made with the help of Creative Scotland who funded the recording\, enabling the duo to enlist some of the finest talent the Scottish music scene has to offer; artists such as Louis Abbott (Admiral Fallow)\, Graeme Smillie (Arab Strap/The Delgados)\, Kris Drever (Lau)\, Chris ‘Beans’ Geddes (Belle & Sebastian)\, Pete Harvey (Modern Studies) and Kenny Anderson (King Creosote). Producer Rod Jones (Idlewild) recorded\, engineered\, and mixed the record at Post Electric Studio in Leith. \n  \nOpener ‘Arrow’ is relaxed and introspective and details a chat they’d had about Willson’s recent turn at archery\, which ended up being the perfect metaphor. Kathryn tells us that “Dan had been taking lessons with his son. We had also been sharing our feelings of transience and the gaps between working and not working\, and touring\, and being home\, and how to carry on through the fluxes of a career. The imagery and specifics of archery really embodied what we were saying to each other”. \n  \n‘Grace’ is an expressive example of their dreamy vocal harmonies and their ability to convey emotion. It started with a mental image of a photo of Kathryn’s father wearing white shoes in the 80s. It’s about memory\, taking things for granted\, wanting recognition and praise\, and how online social activity perpetuates that dependence. It’s followed by ‘R U 4 Real?’ which Dan brought to the table having written it years prior\, to which Kathryn added the finishing touches for its inclusion on ‘Willson Williams’. \n  \nThe filmic ‘Our Best’ was the first song that Kathryn and Dan wrote together. Dan says that “Kath arrived in Edinburgh with a refrain that we worked up into the chorus of this song\, and together we built a delicate structure around it\, tentatively letting our voices harmonise and support each other\, embodying the idea of doing what we can do in the face of seemingly overwhelming odds and changes”. \n  \nThe couple reach out with their first single ‘Shelf’\, a breezy and laid-back number that details their doubts\, but in a playful manner that works to let them and the listener know that they’re in good company. “This song came from laughing about our own insecurities and making fun of ourselves for all that we worry about. The feeling was that we would put up a shelf together in the way adults do DIY and make a difference in their lives. It was a sweet opening of just feeling like neither of us were alone in our weirdness\, which has become a running theme between us and the mental pitfalls of navigating\, performing\, creating and self-worth”. \n  \n‘Wish’ has a sentimental element to it\, it’s about meeting people off trains or saying goodbyes at Waverley Station. It’s also about treasuring the advice from those who aren’t around anymore\, about keeping close the people who have gone and letting them know their gift to you won’t be forgotten. It’s followed by ‘Sweetest Wine’\, which is about regret for not being the person we should have been to someone. It’s about reflection on our past and how to act differently if similar situations arise again. \n  \nThe upbeat ‘Weekend’ conceals an anxiety beneath its immediately accessible pop hooks. Dan says that “This was written after going to see a concert together in Newcastle. Kath’s friend was supporting Supergrass\, who were doing a sell-out show and we arrived with our coats on straight from writing songs all day. It’s a lot about the feeling of being alien in a crowd. Sometimes on weekend nights out it feels like everyone else knows the rules of how to have a good time and we haven’t been given them”. It shares a subject with ‘Elvis’ elsewhere on the album\, another song written after a show\, Elvis Costello at Edinburgh Usher Hall. \n  \nThe album features a cover of Cat Stevens’ ‘Sing Out’\, included after Kathryn referenced the film Harold and Maude as a philosophical companion piece to the tracks. Closer ‘Big Nothing’ features a recording of eco-gardener and philosopher John Butler. It was the last song to be written and its driving rhythms and urgency is in direct opposition to the sentiment of the song\, which is about stillness\, meditation and quiet contemplation. \n  \n‘Willson Williams’ is\, above all else\, about friendship. It’s the embodiment of putting the kettle on in times of trouble\, and evenings putting the world to rights over glasses of wine. It’s about support networks and chosen families. In finding care\, solidarity\, and most importantly joy\, with the ones you love. \n  \nBased in Edinburgh\, Scottish indie folk-pop act Withered Hand is the solo project of singer/songwriter Dan Willson. A veteran of multiple bands in late-’90s and early-2000s Edinburgh music scene\, Willson began his solo career after receiving an acoustic guitar from his wife as a 30th birthday gift. Migrating slowly from bandmate to solo artist\, he began singing and writing his own loose\, jangly songs\, eventually releasing his debut EP\, ‘Religious Songs’\, under the moniker Withered Hand. Finding immediate success with the new format\, Willson released a second EP in 2009 before teaming up with legendary American producer Kramer to make his first full-length album\, ‘Good News’\, in 2010. \n  \nWith his ragged tenor and often lo-fi\, acoustic-based sound\, Willson has come to represent a certain standard in the UK DIY scene and was a part of the Fife-based Fence Collective with acts like King Creosote and James Yorkston. Two more Withered Hand EPs appeared in 2012 before Willson returned to the studio to record his follow-up LP. His second full-length\, ‘New Gods’\, was released in early 2014 by Fortuna Pop and Slumberland. The record was produced by Tony Doogan (Mountain Goats\, Belle and Sebastian) and features help from Black Tambourine’s Pam Berry\, Eugene Kelly of the Vaselines\, and members of Belle and Sebastian and Frightened Rabbit. 2022 saw him release his latest LP\, ‘How To Love’\, acclaimed by the likes of The New Yorker\, The Scotsman\, Folk Radio and more. \n  \nKathryn Williams is often described as “a songwriter’s songwriter”\, her timeless and searching work has earned her accolades\, critical acclaim\, and a loyal fan-base. In this new musical world when we talk about an artist’s body of work\, we tend to think of a handful of records stretched out across of a handful of years\, if we’re lucky. A changing industry and a focus on immediacy has done little to alter such notions\, which makes Kathryn Williams something of an anomaly – releasing 12 full-length albums under her own name since her debut LP\, ‘Dog Leap Stairs’\, released in 1999. \n  \nAs impressive a stat as that might be\, it does little to capture the true magic of Williams work; the enchanting craft that has grown and expanded as she’s moved from one project to the next\, from the breakthrough success of her Mercury Prize nominated ‘Little Black Numbers’ all the way to her Sylvia Plath tribute project ‘Hypoxia’ and her Christmas album ‘Midnight Chorus’\, written with Dame Carol Ann Duffy. Her 2022 album ‘Night Drives’ received praise from the likes of MOJO\, Uncut\, The Observer\, Record Collector\, The Line Of Best Fit\, Clash Magazine and more. While her best-known work is characterised by rich and honest songwriting inspired by the greats\, Williams has continually been able to evolve as an artist because she’s always looked outside of such boundaries. She continues to listen and learn while\, at the same time\, writing with a fiery spirit and a sense of adventure that has never once wilted. \n
